General Motors

Engineer – Mechatronics

Warren, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

Engineer – Mechatronics

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

Join the ARC Robotics Technology Development team and help turn advanced automation concepts into integrated robotic systems for manufacturing. As an Engineer on the ARC Robotics Technology Development team, you will own the physical integration of electrical and mechanical subsystems within advanced robotics platforms supporting GM Manufacturing Operations. This role focuses on packaging, routing, mounting, harnessing, power distribution implementation, and mechanical interface design for robotic and automated systems including cobots, AMRs, material delivery platforms, and other advanced automation solutions.

Justification

Critical skills needed to support strategic automation initiatives and technology development across GM Manufacturing Operations.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid. This role requires the employee to be onsite an average of three days per week.

The Role

The ARC Robotics Technology Development team develops advanced robotics and automation solutions for GM Manufacturing Operations. The team supports next generation manufacturing and material handling applications by creating systems that can be built, tested, validated, and deployed in real production environments.

As an Engineer focused on Electro-Mechanical Integration, you will own the physical implementation of electrical systems within robotic and automated equipment. You will develop solutions for component packaging, cable routing, harnessing, mounting, power distribution implementation, and mechanical interfaces that allow electrical architectures to be realized reliably in the machine. You will work closely with Electrical Systems, Mechanical Systems, Digital Twin and Validation, manufacturing teams, and suppliers to ensure integrated solutions are robust, serviceable, and ready for test and deployment.

What You Will Do

• Design and integrate electro-mechanical subsystems for robotic and automated equipment, including sensors, actuators, harnessing, power distribution implementation, and mechanical interfaces
• Support integration of cobots, AMRs, robotic material handling systems, automated kitting and sequencing systems, and other advanced automation platforms
• Develop packaging, cable routing, mounting, connector, and access solutions for electrical hardware
• Partner with Electrical Systems to convert electrical architecture into practical machine level implementation
• Work with Mechanical Systems to resolve packaging, motion, clearance, and serviceability constraints
• Support prototype builds, system bring up, hardware integration testing, and deployment activities
• Troubleshoot electro mechanical issues and drive root cause resolution during development and validation
• Collaborate with robotics, controls, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure effective system integration
• Develop integration documentation, test procedures, and validation support materials
• Improve system robustness and maintainability through strong integration design practices

Your Skills and Abilities

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
• Experience integrating electro-mechanical systems including sensors, actuators, harnessing, and mechanical interfaces
• Strong understanding of cable routing, connector selection, mounting, access, and serviceability in complex machinery
• Ability to interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and electrical schematics
• Hands on experience supporting prototype builds, hardware integration, or system validation
• Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
• Ability to work across mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and supplier teams
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Willingness to support lab and plant activities

What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage

• 5 or more years of experience in robotics, automotive, automation, or electro mechanical system development
• Experience supporting AMRs, automated material handling systems, or factory automation platforms
• Experience with automated kitting and sequencing systems in production environments
• Familiarity with robotics hardware architecture and system integration processes
• Experience collaborating with suppliers, vendors, or external integrators
• Experience supporting system bring up, hardware validation, and deployment in manufacturing environments
