Job Description:

Our Product Engineering Department work to develop and qualify new plastic non-hermetic products and improve our existing product portfolio offerings to the discrete semiconductor market. We create and nurture relationships with our silicon fab and assembly houses to manufacture product – qualification testing is completed onsite in Ireland and reliability is added to our product by way of screening devices onsite in Ireland also. We have developed an in-house Failure Analysis Lab to aid in understanding the root cause of any assembly related issues or qualification\screening rejects along with any possible failures in the field.

What you will do in this position:

As a Product Development Engineer, you will progress projects through the product development cycle and setup appropriate manufacturing processes to produce reliable discrete semiconductor products for high-reliability sectors such as commercial aviation and space applications. The job will also require product support functions, for example dealing with sub-contractor manufacturing issues.

The role is multifaceted and so is both interesting and challenging. This occurs through a mix of exposure to project management of product development cycle through to production release at a high level, coupled with acquiring an in-depth knowledge of your product to piece part level and understanding potential design and application issues. You will have the opportunity to consult with our experts in discrete semiconductors and broaden your knowledge in this field.

Key job responsibilities/duties include:

  • Design and Development of high reliability discrete semiconductor components
  • Liaise with Product Line Managers, Sales, and Marketing to develop product specifications and technical literature.
  • Understand industry specifications as they apply to assigned products and processes.
  • Obtain a thorough understanding of development and production procedures to bring a stable product to market.
  • Understand the importance and expectations of project scheduling and meeting deadlines.
  • Produce and implement project plans in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain project file with detailed specifications and reports.
  • Implement qualification plans and publish technical information.
  • Develop expertise in various project, test and product development software packages and equipment.
  • Work with the subcontractors and production department to implement the appropriate quality systems.
  • Consult with other Microchip Divisions and test equipment suppliers to ensure best practices in component selection and manufacturing.
  • Perform in-depth & controlled studies of specific problems, processes and yield improvements as required and specify appropriate corrective/preventative actions.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with customers or suppliers in Europe, USA and Asia.
  • Support in-house training programs as required.
  • Take on other engineering duties as required and assigned.
  • Travel internationally on occasion as necessary.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering with experience.
  • Minimum of two to four years’ experience in new product development, preferably in the semiconductor industry.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Decision-making, problem resolution and resourceful thinking skills.
  • Ability to multi-task across various tasks with shifting priorities.
  • Highly energetic, motivated and self-starter.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willing to work in an environment that allows initiative and requires flexibility.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and interact across departments preferably in a manufacturing environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Prior experience in a high-volume semiconductor environment.
  • Understanding of MIL-PRF-19500
  • FEA and simulation package experience preferably Ansys.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience in Failure Analysis of semiconductors would be beneficial.
  • Experience in Labview & Jump programming would be beneficial.

Benefits of working at Microchip

The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in Massachusetts, is $68,640 - $143,000.*

*Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
