The Strategic Planning & Development Engineer will be integral to the team during the development phase of the PGO Distribution portfolio. The position provides programmatic oversight and/or assistance during the scoping of key strategic programs such as Self-Optimizing Grid (SOG), Voltage Management, Targeted Underground (TUG), Integrated Volt/VAR Control (IVVC) and other programs seeking to improve reliability and resiliency. This position will also provide oversight and/or perform duties conducting technical reviews of scope to ensure quality deliverables to downstream stakeholders while managing work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Strategic Planning & Development Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in this role are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures and is capable of identifying problems, developing solutions and taking action to resolve.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reviews, reports, correspondence, and documentation related to the initial development of assigned portfolio
Provides input on project scope and collaborates with project teams
Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Required/Basic Qualifications for Engineer III
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
4 years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) and 4 years related work experience listed above, Bachelors degree in another field of study and Masters in Engineering
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and experience with Distribution and/or Transmission Line Projects in the Electric Power Industry
Proficient in engineering theories and principles
Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, to include the ability to present information to stakeholders at the leadership level
Proficient in principles of project management
Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
Experience in transmission or distribution planning or operations
Demonstrated proficiency with electric grid distribution, to include, but not limited to Self-Optimizing Grid (SOG), voltage management, Targeted Underground (TUG), Integrated Volt/VAR Control (IVVC), Urban Underground Automation (UUA)
Superior problem solving and analytical skills
Working Conditions
Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
