Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer II or one level higher as an Engineer III dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.
The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
The Engineer III position solves complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
SCADA system engineers perform design, programming, and support of Station Data Manager (SDMs). SCADA devices provide real time data to assist our Operations and Construction resources to evaluate and mitigate issues at our Transmission and Distribution substations across the Duke system. SCADA devices also provide the means to locally or remotely operate devices at the substations. SCADA also creates Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to aid in the local operation of our Transmission substations.
Understanding of communication protocols, networking, troubleshooting, basic relay protection and settings, HMI software, and automation/computing platforms. Development of Communication Forms (IPCF) from a high level scope, in addition to the understanding of One Lines (OLs), Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Panel Drawings, etc. Creation of IO Summaries based on drawings and relay settings. Adhere and develop processes and procedures for both internal and external use including compliance. Provide field support both remote and onsite. Participate in yearly NERC CIP audits. Working knowledge of AutoCAD is desired. Familiarity with SEL products.
With Limited Supervision:
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.
Creates thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
Conducts engineering and related studies.
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic Requirements - Engineer II
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
2+ years of engineering experience
Basic Requirements - Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
4+ years of engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Computer or Mechanical Engineering
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Experience in the utility industry.
Basic understanding of protective relay settings
Familiarity with various communication protocols and telecommunications.
Familiarity with Regulatory Requirement including NERC-CIP

Experience in the utility industry.
Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
Travel Requirements
15-25%
