Hendrick Motorsports, a leader in the auto racing industry, is currently seeking a Engine Production Machinist, operating the Sunnen SV-30 Cylinder Hone.
Summary: Primarily tasked with operating the Sunnen SV-30 Cylinder Hone. Creating and revising programs for CNC machinery. They must understand and interpret complex technical drawings and translate them into executable CNC programs. The role demands a high level of precision and attention to detail to ensure that machine outputs meet exact specifications and quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Operation of SV-30 hone, including installation of hone deck plates. Recording essential data including bore sizes and surface finish measurements.
- Create or modify 3-axis or greater CNC programs for production runs including entering instructions, setting tool registers, and calculating requirements.
- Measure dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures.
- Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems.
- Adjust machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machines malfunction.
- Stop machines to remove finished work pieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences.
- Check to ensure that work pieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.
- Input initial part dimensions into machine control panels.
- Confer with supervisors or programmers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors or to obtain approval to continue production.
- Monitor machine operation and control panel displays and compare readings to specifications to detect malfunctions.
- Clean machines, tooling, or parts using solvents or solutions and rags. Also responsible for cleaning the shop and ensuring safe housekeeping on an ongoing basis.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments.
- Set, monitor, and modify tolerance levels and cutting speeds to produce the component or part to specification.
- Inspect produced components or parts to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Must be able to use tools, such as lathes, mills, cutters, and grinders as needed to perform required requested work.
- Other duties assigned by management.
Education/Experience:
- Must be a team player and effectively utilize strong communication skills with others in the department and organization. Requires extensive knowledge of hand tools, drill press, grinders, and other machine shop equipment.
Physical Demands:
- Requires vision (near, peripheral, depth), sense of touch, and ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – hearing protection, safety glasses, and hand protection. Constantly stands, lifts/carries 10 pounds or less, and pushes/pulls 12 pounds or less.
- Frequently reaches outward, lifts/carries up to 50 pounds, and pushes/pulls up to 25 pounds. Occasionally walks, sits, reaches above shoulder, crawls, squats or kneels, bends, lifts/carries up to and over 100 pounds, and pushes/pulls up to 100 pounds.
Environment Demands:
- Primarily works indoors. May be exposed to loud noises.
