JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary
Axcelis is seeking a highly experienced Senior Equipment Engineer to lead the development, optimization, and support of advanced ion implant systems. In this strategic role, you will play a key part in evaluating emerging technologies, driving equipment enhancements, and influencing product development through early design feedback. You will serve as a technical leader within a multidisciplinary engineering team, interfacing directly with cross-functional groups to align equipment performance with evolving business and customer needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the operation and evaluation of ion implantation systems, partnering with Applications, Marketing, Sales, and key customers to define demo criteria and lead advanced product characterizations.
  • Oversee and guide complex maintenance activities across Source, Beamline, and wafer handling subsystems, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational excellence.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution of critical system issues, coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering resources and driving timely solutions.
  • Analyze and interpret complex equipment performance data; develop actionable insights and strategic recommendations to improve reliability, throughput, and yield.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect and execute comprehensive test strategies for new platforms and process capabilities. Act as the primary technical authority on tool configuration and integration.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the knowledge base around scientific and technical principles underpinning system operation.
  • Influence preventive maintenance standards, documentation practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and manage priorities in a dynamic, high-tech manufacturing environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills across mechanical, electrical, and process domains.
  • Capable of performing physically demanding tasks while complying with all PPE and safety requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data analysis tools.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in semiconductor equipment engineering, with a focus on ion implantation or similar complex systems.

U.S. BASE SALARY RANGE

$121,502.40 - $182,253.60

This base salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role across U.S. locations.

Our salary ranges are determined by role and level; individual pay is determined based on

multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, work

location, and internal equity. The range provides the opportunity for growth and progression as

you develop within the role.

Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the

Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular

employees working 20+ hours a week).
