Energy Corporate Banking – Associate II (Upstream/E&P)

 

The Energy Corporate Banking Associate II is a developing leader responsible for delivering advanced analytical, underwriting, and execution support within the firm’s Upstream (E&P) coverage vertical. This role partners closely with Senior Coverage Bankers to originate, structure, and execute comprehensive financing and strategic solutions for public and private E&P clients, including mineral and royalty, operated, and non-operated working interest companies.

 

The Associate II is expected to demonstrate strong technical fluency in reserve‑based lending (RBLs), upstream asset valuation, commodity price dynamics, and forecasted cash flow modeling. As a key member of the deal team, the Associate II drives critical execution workstreams, aids in the management and mentoring of the analyst staff, and contributes to relationship development within the firm’s energy platform. The position will report directly to the Head of Upstream within the firm’s broader Corporate and Investment Banking Energy practice.

Key Responsibilities

Client Coverage & Sector Expertise

 

  • Lead preparation of materials for client and prospect meetings and increasingly participate in external discussions with management teams, CFOs, and Treasurers.

  • Maintain a deep understanding of covered clients’ operating strategies, reserve composition, capex programs, breakeven economics, and overall credit profiles.

  • Assist Senior Coverage Bankers in developing tailored financing and strategic solutions across RBL facilities, term loans, acquisition financings, hedging strategies, and broader capital markets alternatives.

  • Aid in identification of cross‑sell opportunities across the product platform to further deepen economic connectivity within existing relationships.

 

Transaction Execution & Underwriting

 

  • Drive end-to-end process management for active transactional work: diligence coordination, internal/external material preparation, financial modeling, and thorough documentation review and summarization.

  • Independently lead key portions and processes of underwriting for RBLs and upstream corporate financings leveraging the firm’s balance sheet, including new facility origination, borrowing base redeterminations, technical reserve evaluations, client correspondence, and related risk approval processes.

  • Oversee analyst workstreams, review and refine, and elevate deliverables to senior bankers—ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with practice standards.

  • Manage complex financial models including engineering-based cash-flow models, operating statistic benchmarking models, structural and valuation comp databases, portfolio management models and related tools

  • Review, interpret, and brief senior bankers on engineering evaluations, including production forecasts, sensitivity scenarios, capex programs, and hedge strategy implications.

 

 

 

  • Prepare, review, and refine diligence requests and lead preparations for management presentations, lender meetings, and internal committees.

  • Oversee ongoing portfolio monitoring program to ensure diligent client management

 

Leadership, Team Development & Internal Collaboration

 

  • Provide day-to-day mentorship and direction to analysts, setting expectations on modeling, analysis, and presentation development.

  • Coordinate closely with risk, petroleum engineering, capital markets, syndications, sales and trading, and treasury partners to ensure seamless transaction execution and holistic coverage.

  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and developing junior talent, serving as a role model for work ethic, technical acumen, and professionalism.

  • Take on internal leadership tasks suitable for a senior associate (e.g., training sessions, product initiative support, knowledge sharing).

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Energy Commerce, or a related business discipline.

  • 3.5–4.5 years of relevant Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Leveraged Finance, or Private Credit experience.

  • Strong understanding of Upstream/E&P credit fundamentals, including cash‑flow forecasting, leverage metrics, covenant structures, borrowing bases, and loan documentation.

  • Proficiency in financial modeling (LBO, DCF, A&D analysis, capital structure analysis) and corporate valuation.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex data, assess risk, and propose actionable recommendations.

  • Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills and ability to clearly articulate insights to senior bankers and clients.

  • Highly organized with ability to manage multiple live workstreams under tight deadlines in a team‑oriented environment.

  • Deep working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; experience or general familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM tools.

 

Preferred

  • Energy banking or related energy-sector experience, including exposure to leading acquisition financings (particularly RBL structures), upstream reserve engineering fundamentals, and/or private credit transactional work.

  • Experience interacting with internal Technical/Engineering groups, third‑party reserve engineers, and external legal counsel.

  • Familiarity with derivatives, commodity price dynamics, and related risk management strategies

  • Formal Microsoft Excel training specific to financial modeling or commensurate instruction/experience
