About Wake Forest Emergency Medicine:

Our medical center is an 885-bed tertiary care institution affiliated with the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Large, Academic EM program with 15 EM Residents per year.

Our emergency department is the premier level 1Trauma Center emergency department in the region and a national leader in clinical care, education, and research.  Our department, featuring a new state-of-the-art facility, serves as a high-volume, high-acuity level I trauma center, burn center, stroke center, and STEMI center. With an annual volume exceeding 110,000 patient visits (combination of adult and pediatric), we address the full spectrum of human illness and injury.

Our collaborative provider team includes faculty attending physicians, emergency medicine and off-service resident house officers, and advanced practice providers (APPs). Our APP team is exceptional, well-respected, and fully integrated into all aspects of care delivery.

Staff:  10 Full time APPs on the team.  Collegial team environment.  Well supported by attending physicians with at least two (usually three) faculty physicians in the ED.    

Role: “True Emergency Medicine” – Classic and cutting edge EM work with APPs fully integrated in the care teams.

Training: New graduates are welcome and supported with a robust onboarding program.  Paired 1x1 with an experienced APP for the first 3 months.

Licensure: Must have NC PA/NP license (NPs must be ENP boarded or eligible), BLS, ACLS before starting. Must obtain ATLS after starting eventually.

 

Schedule: : Day and evening shifts are primarily 8 hr shifts with one12 hr shift.   7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-5p, 3p-11p, 11:30a-11:30p.  No overnights currently, but that is subject to change. 

Minimum 152 hrs per month (35 hrs per week).

4 weekend days per month required

Education/Experience: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Licensure, Certification and/or Registration: PA licensure

Essential Functions:

  • Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in diagnosing emergency medical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and service for quality patient care; record data and tentative conclusions for review by physician.
  • Coordinate and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Carry out complex patient care services under indirect physician supervision using advanced medical knowledge; monitor progress of patients, maintain a record of the patient's progress, and consult with supervising physician when patient's progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.
  • Plan and schedule work for the physician's health team ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing, space and facilities for subsequent performance of assigned duties.
  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Teach students, residents and interns in complex techniques and procedures which are unique to Emergency Medicine.
  • Ensures complete and accurate documentation in the medical record of assessment and plan of care.
  • Participate in continuing education in emergency/ urgent care.
  • Remain up to date with department and hospital policy and guidelines.
  • Ensure age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
