PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide laboratory technical support of electronic and mechanical testing equipment for engineering courses, college-level research, individual cadet projects, and engineering instruction.

Major Duties:

  • Provides laboratory technical support to cadets, faculty, and researchers on testing equipment; experiments for cadet and faculty research; and individual projects. Performs repair, installation, maintenance, and modification of electronic, and mechanical lab equipment. Designs, builds, configure, and modify test specimens, test systems, and demonstration devices for laboratory exercises and department research. Monitors ongoing operation of department computer systems to ensure hardware and software are functioning properly and that operational standards are met. Manages laboratory equipment and supplies. Insures compliance with safety rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: GS-0856: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0800/electronics-technical-series-0856/ SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes a comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge of the technical field of electronics and mechanical test systems, and skill in applying this knowledge to the development of new methods, approaches, or procedures as it related to a research function. Maintains awareness of work environment safety procedures and promptly reports unsafe practices and/or procedures, accidents, injuries, and/or violations. Troubleshoots hardware and software problems to determine specific problem to determine and implement corrective action to resolve the problem. OR EDUCATION: 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education (such as a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree) in a field directly related to the position FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of advanced techniques and theories characteristic of electronics such as electronic theory, electrical and electronic circuit design and fabrication, , and electro-mechanical devices. 2. Knowledge of unique engineering instruments, equipment, and systems appropriate to engineering mechanics, including component and system calibration skills, and testing procedures and methods. 3. Knowledge of characteristics, functions, operations and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic and mechanical measurement equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, spectrum analyzers. and signal generators. 4. Knowledge of construction, fabrication, or manufacturing techniques and procedures and of material properties used in these activities and of metallurgical test specimen preparation. 5. Knowledge of safety and occupational health requirements as outlined in applicable standards and regulations. 6. Knowledge of current automation technology and practices to include networking and programming and the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of it use and provide assistance to others. 7. Knowledge of laboratory equipment set-up and testing procedures to support engineering courses and college-level research projects in applied mechanics, engineering fundamentals, and materials engineering. 8. Knowledge of computer hardware and software systems and their interfaces. Ability to analyze computer network, software, and hardware problems, and develop effective and economical solutions. 9. Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools, including lathe, mill, welding, woodworking equipment. Skill in programming application languages for test equipment and data acquisition systems. 10. Ability to use and configure commercially available data acquisition systems. 11. Ability to plan sequences of independent activities based on broad research objectives, in the absence of detailed guidance and to organize work to meet deadlines and broadly stated objectives. 12. Ability to adapt, modify, or design mechanical and electronic equipment to meet course or experimental needs and to troubleshoot various types of mechanical and electronic equipment, including universal test machines, scanning electron microscopes, autoclaves, and chassis dynamometers. 13. Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain good working relationships. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.
