Job Summary: The Electronics Technician (Laundry) serves as the technical expert for a centralized VISN laundry system covering the states of Kentucky and Tennessee at the Robley Rex Medical Center with the Facilities Management service.

Major Duties:

  • Major duties consist of but not limited to: Responsible for all phases of development, evaluation, modification, installation, maintenance, and maintenance training related to the mechanical & electronic systems of the laundry. Maintains complex Laundry systems, which are vital to the hospital's ability to provide health care. Plans and performing scheduled and emergency service on these devices to insure that they are working properly, maintained properly, calibrated and in compliance will all applicable codes and standards. Seeks ways to reduce breakdowns or enhance accuracy and reliability. Determines whether or not equipment is performing satisfactorily. Serves as a technical advisor and consultant for the entire VISN 9 laundry system and to the M&O Supervisor in the purchase of new equipment to meet current and projected hospital and network needs. Regularly inspects incoming equipment to insure it performs to design and VA specifications. Designs and install modifications on equipment. Teaches configuration and maintenance of advanced Laundry equipment to other medical center and VISN personnel. Analyzes, isolate and corrects malfunctions, and recommend improvements. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/04/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-10. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 level, you must meet one of the following: Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-10) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of an Electronics Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: (1) Work as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions. (2) Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment. OR Education: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education that is directly related to the work of the Electronics Technician position such as electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. OR Combination: Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond a master's degree) and specialized experience, as described above, which may be used to meet total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Electronics Technician position such as electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. Physical requirements: Performs bench and fieldwork, standing and bending in cramped and awkward positions. Usually handles equipment weighing from 10 to 40 pounds, and occasionally in excess of 40 pounds. Work is done in the shop setting, ceilings, crawl spaces and manholes.
