Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Studies Engineer - REMOTE

Dallas, TX Full time

Title: Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Studies Engineer

Location: Remote US

Ready to make a difference?

We are a client-focused engineering group reimagining how electric utilities and energy developers solve complex grid challenges. We’re seeking a passionate, innovative power systems engineer with deep expertise in electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to help our clients tackle emerging transmission issues and integrate new power resources. In this role, you will apply your skills to a broad range of projects – from analyzing transient events in transmission networks (e.g. capacitor switching surges or transformer energization) to studying interactions in generation systems (e.g. sub-synchronous resonance in turbine-generators or control tuning for inverter-based resources).

Join us in delivering high-quality solutions across both conventional and renewable energy projects as we navigate the rapidly evolving electric power landscape.

Why you’ll love working here:

  • Quality of life: Fully remote, work-life balance
  • Investment of the community: Donation matching, volunteer opportunities
  • Investment in you: Tuition reimbursement, access to professional development resources, 401k matching, Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • And many, many more (Ask your recruiter for more details!)

The Ideal Candidate

You are a highly motivated electrical engineer who takes pride in delivering top-notch work. You’re proactive and self-sufficient, able to tackle complex simulations autonomously while meeting deadlines. You work well remotely, staying productive without close supervision. You continually expand your knowledge and seek ways to improve processes for greater quality and efficiency. A true team player, you communicate effectively and prioritize team goals. You’re comfortable in a client-facing role, eager to take on new responsibilities, and excited to learn new skills whenever needed.

What you will be doing:

As an EMT Studies Engineer, you will lead and support a wide range of electromagnetic transient studies for utility, developer, and ISO clients. Your work will span both generation and transmission systems, including conventional and renewable energy projects, substations, and high-voltage transmission networks. You’ll apply advanced simulation tools to analyze complex transient interactions and contribute to broader transmission planning efforts.

Daily/weekly responsibilities can include but are not limited to:

  • Performing EMT studies using PSCAD, EMTP, or equivalent tools to analyze phenomena such as SSR, SSCI, TOV, TRV, inrush, harmonics, and insulation coordination.
  • Developing and validating detailed models of transmission lines, substations, generators, inverters, and protection systems.
  • Supporting interconnection studies for both renewable and conventional generation, including combustion turbines and large industrial loads.
  • Conducting dynamic stability studies using PSS/E, PSLF, or PowerWorld.
  • Collaborating with clients and internal teams to define study scopes, present findings, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Preparing clear, technically sound reports and presentations for stakeholders.
  • Automating simulation workflows using Python, MATLAB, or similar scripting tools.
  • Staying current with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, NERC) and contributing to internal process improvements.

What we need you to have (minimum qualifications):

  • BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET certified college or university
  • 5+ years of experience performing electromagnetic transient studies. (Each year of education may be substituted for 1 year of experience (Master’s/PhD.)
  • 8+ years of experience with PSCAD, EMTP, PSSE/PSLF Dynamic Modules, or other equivalent software packages

What we would like you to have (preferred qualifications):

  • Certification: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Advanced Degree: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus on Power Systems or Power Electronics.
  • Grid Knowledge: Familiarity with ISO/RTO interconnection processes (PJM, MISO, ERCOT, etc.) and relevant NERC/IEEE standards.
  • Software Skills: Experience performing transmission planning studies on power system tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PowerWorld, or ASPEN/CAPE, and proficiency in scripting (e.g. Python, MATLAB) for automating analyses.
  • Project Experience: Experience on a diverse range of projects including renewable energy (wind, solar, storage) and conventional generation (gas or steam turbines), as well as high-voltage transmission and substation systems.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and client interaction.
  • Client Management: Experience working in consulting or another client-focus role
