Job Summary: This position is located to the Engineering Service, within the Facilities Management Division of the Iowa City VA Health Care System. The incumbent serves as a journeyman-level electrician, responsible for the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of electrical systems and equipment throughout the medical center campus. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.

Major Duties:

• Major duties include: Plans and installs complete electrical systems for new equipment, facility renovations, and infrastructure upgrades. Interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and one-line diagrams to determine layout, materials, and methods. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and diagnostic testing on electrical systems and components. Troubleshoots issues in lighting systems, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), motor controls, emergency power systems, and fire alarms, applying technical knowledge to restore functionality efficiently. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and diagnostic testing on electrical systems and components. Operates and maintains the facility's primary electrical distribution system, including 13,800-volt switchgear buildings, transformers, and automatic transfer switches. Conducts field investigations to assess system health and plan corrective actions. Coordinates with engineering staff to ensure uninterrupted service during upgrades or repairs. Independently plans electrical projects, including material procurement, labor estimates, and scheduling. Conducts safety assessments addressing lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc flash hazards, infection control, and environmental impact. Collaborates with other shops to support cross-functional maintenance and repair efforts. Physical Requirements: Work involves prolonged standing, crouching, and climbing. Tasks are performed on ladders, scaffolding, and in confined spaces such as mechanical rooms and ceilings cavities. Frequently lifts equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more with assistance.
