Job Summary: The position is organizationally located in the Veteran Health Indiana, Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Affairs Medical Center's, Facilities Management/Engineering Service, Electric Shop, under the direct supervision of the Electrician Supervisor. Work assignments come from supervisor, work orders, or emergent situations as reported. Incumbent will exercise judgment in prioritizing assignments unless otherwise directed by supervisor.

Major Duties:

  • The duties of the position may include but are not limited to the following: Electrical System Maintenance and Repair: The Electrician works under the general supervision of the Electric Shop Supervisor, using work orders, verbal instructions, blueprints, wiring diagrams, repair manuals, etc. Works in a variety of controlled environments such as research and development laboratories where the electrician will fabricate, install, modify, and troubleshoot specialized electrical control or monitoring systems and equipment designed to meet unique conditions associated with research and development projects. Works on low, medium, and high voltage switchgear and advanced electrical distribution systems with voltages ranging from O (Volts) to 14,000 (Volts). Performs a wide variety of duties as a journeyman electrician with little or no technical supervision. Works independently making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats. The incumbent receives work orders, oral instructions, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls, and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment through visual check or through use of a large variety of test equipment, for example, test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers. Performs necessary repairs to installed systems, and rearrange and hook up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers. Incumbent must also work closely with Healthcare Technology Management {HTM/Biomed) related to medical equipment. Testing and Documentation: The incumbent is responsible for inspection, testing, and maintaining accurate records of various electrical systems on the medical center campus to include, but not limited to campus wide generator system, individual generators, lighting, automatic transfer switches, emergency exit lighting, fuel pump systems, isolation monitors, uninterruptable power system (UPS), underground storage tank (UST), lightning protection, emergency power systems, load bank testing, circuits, breakers, panels, controls, elevators, and equipment. Ensures work is being documented; work orders are completed in a proper, satisfactory, and timely manner. Documents work orders in MAXIMO to include time and material cost. Incumbent shall inspect, locate and diagnose trouble and perform maintenance service and repairs to electrical wiring systems, circuit breaker panels, automatic and manual fire alarm systems, automatic door systems, nurse call systems, emergency alarm systems, lighting systems, clocks, thermostats, heating equipment, light fixtures, LED lighting systems and controls, UPS, motors and motor control systems, fans, shop equipment, and electrically powered equipment. The electrician shall perform preventative maintenance on electrical equipment and hardware such as sockets, plugs, bulbs, cords, wall plates, storage batteries, etc. Performs the electrical portion of the preventative maintenance program and checks the mechanical and plumbing items visually during the inspection for obvious issues to be reported to the appropriate shop. Conducts the test of electrical receptacles for ground tension, etc., and checks technical/non-technical medical equipment for grounding and leakage. Electrical Construction and Renovations: The incumbent runs conduit, pulls wires, installs electrical signs/ lighting, installs outlets and switches, and connects electrical power to new equipment. He/she plans, lays out, the needed placement, arrangement, and routing of systems, circuits, controls, and equipment. He/she determines size, type, gauge of wiring, conduit, fittings, relays, control and distribution panels needed for the safe operation of systems, circuits, and equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturer's literature, and specification for sizing, estimating, installing, and repairing new or existing electrical systems. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
