Electrical R&D Engineer

Job Summary

The Electrical R&D Engineer contributes to the design, development, testing, and refinement of new electromechanical medical devices for Cardinal Health. This role involves working on critical products such as enteral feeding pumps, thermometers, and compression devices. A key aspect of the position includes utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) packages to develop 3D product models, specifications, and detailed drawings. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manufacturers, business partners, and vendors globally to ensure successful project execution within a regulated medical device environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical design and implement design changes for New Product Introduction (NPI) and Sustaining Engineering projects.
  • Design and analyze analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronics, including microcontroller-based circuits, power electronics, and battery management systems.
  • Create electrical system schematics, PCB designs, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Conduct component selection, alternate parts identification, and manage MCO/ECO releases under design controls.
  • Develop and execute test protocols and reports for design verification testing (DVT), etc.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits at the component, board, and system levels, performing root cause analysis.
  • Develop test systems, methods, and fixtures, utilizing electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and data acquisition systems.
  • Generate PCBA manufacturing files, including BOMs and Gerber files.
  • Assist with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Testing, Reliability testing, Test Methods Validation, circuit and device level troubleshooting, problem etc.
  • Manage project tasks to meet schedules and support external design partners.
  • Perform circuit and system-level simulations using eCAD tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering preferred
  • Knowledge of PCBA schematic and layout design from definition to manufacturing release (Altium or equivalent CAD tools)
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded electronics (digital and analog), and wireless circuits.
  • Ability to use lab test equipment such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers for troubleshooting and characterization.
  • Understanding of medical device design controls and documentation change management.
  • Familiarity with creating electro-mechanical test fixtures and scripting languages (e.g., Python, LabView).
  • Knowledge of Electrical CAD design, SPICE-based electrical design simulation, and MATLAB systems simulation.
  • Basic software knowledge (C, C++, Python) and familiarity with AI concepts are a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to communicate technical concepts effectively.

Anticipated salary range: $65,400 – 84,150
