Electrical Engineer – Electric Generation
Job Summary
The Electrical Engineer – Electric Generation supports the safe, reliable operation of generating station electrical systems by designing, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and station equipment. This role leads and/or supports electrical upgrades and testing programs, coordinates with Operations and Maintenance, contractors, and outage schedules, and ensures required compliance activities (including applicable NERC/FERC testing and documentation) are completed. This position is posted as a five-level job family (Associate Engineer through Senior Engineer); the successful candidate will be placed at the level that best aligns with their education, experience, and demonstrated qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain safety as the primary consideration in planning and executing all work, testing, and projects.
Develop and apply protective relaying and control schemes: originate/update relaying schematics, follow established design control logic, and ensure compliance with proper relaying practices and NIPSCO standards.
Review designs and support field execution: verify drawings and field wiring; provide on-site engineering support and direction to operations, maintenance, construction, and contractors to ensure equipment is installed and operates as intended.
Perform and/or direct commissioning and maintenance testing: acceptance, calibration, functional testing, final load checks, and periodic inspections/maintenance of protective relays, control systems, and major station electrical equipment (e.g., transformers, breakers, generators, motors, instrument transformers, regulators, CTs/PTs, inverters/UPS, batteries, chargers).
Maintain station monitoring and condition-assessment capabilities including DFR/SER equipment and infrared scans; analyze results, identify emerging issues, and recommend/track mitigations.
Troubleshoot protective relaying/control schemes and station equipment; respond to trouble calls and provide after-hours support as needed to restore reliable operation.
Lead projects as Project Manager/Technical Lead: define scope, develop proposals/specifications, develop schedules and cost estimates, manage budgets/forecasts, support bid evaluation, administer contracts, procure materials, coordinate multi-craft work in a union environment, and oversee inspection/testing and closeout documentation.
Drive reliability and performance improvement: investigate equipment and O&M practices impacting reliability/availability/efficiency/cost/safety/environmental compliance; perform root cause analysis; implement cost-effective corrective actions; develop monitoring programs and evaluate operating/PM trends to verify results.
Ensure compliance and records management: review work for adherence to engineering standards/codes; plan and execute work during planned/unplanned outages including required NERC/FERC testing; document test data and maintain current electrical prints and schematics.
Provide technical assistance across Generation and coach/mentor operations and maintenance personnel to improve technical capability, repair quality, and test/documentation practices
Qualifications

Ability to devise and apply specific test procedures related to protective relay control systems and their associated elements
Ability to troubleshoot relay control schemes in a logical manner
Ability to operate complex electrical test and measurement equipment and accurately interpret results
Organizational and planning skills to plan workload and logically layout project schedules
Demonstrated knowledge of generating station design, operations, and maintenance practices
Proficiency in engineering principles and experience in work included in responsibilities outlined above
Proficient in the use of computers, diagnostic test equipment, reading and interpreting electrical prints and schematics
Ability to comprehend and translate technical papers and standards
Ability to apply root cause analysis principles and relate inspection observations to operating and maintenance practices
Strong verbal and written communications skills
Demonstrated project management skills and experience
Lead, perform and properly document, all mandated NERC/FERC testing
Associate Engineer Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology (ABET-accredited) college or university program or degree earned by May 2026
0–12 months relevant experience
Valid driver’s license

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET-accredited) college or university program or degree earned by May 2026
Engineer 1 Requirements
1+ years relevant experience
Everything in the Associate Engineer level plus
Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals
Ability to prepare cost estimates under supervision
Engineer 2 Requirements
4+ years of equivalent experience
Everything in the Engineer 1 level plus
Growing expertise in engineering principles and project execution
Preferred:
Familiarity with NIPSCO system configuration and utility codes
PMP certification; advanced project management skills
Engineer 3 Requirements
9+ years of equivalent experience
Everything in the Engineer 2 level plus
Ability to manage complex projects and mentor junior engineers
Preferred:
EIT/PE certification; PMP certification
Senior Engineer Requirements
12+ years of equivalent experience
Everything in the Engineer 3 level plus
Expert knowledge of engineering principles, compliance standards
Strong leadership, coaching, and project management skills
Preferred:
Advanced degree in Business or Engineering
This position is posted as a five-level Electrical Engineer – Electric Generation job family, ranging from Associate through Senior. The successful candidate will be placed at the level that most appropriately corresponds to their education, experience, and qualifications.
Salary Range
Associate Engineer: $69,900 – $105,000
Engineer 1: $69,900 – $105,000
Engineer 2: $82,200 - $123,200
Engineer 3: $96,600 – $144,900
Senior Engineer: $113,500 – $170,300
