Job Summary: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard (USCG) Yard, Engineering Branch in Baltimore, MD. This is an appointment under the US Coast Guard's Recent Graduates Program. The program duration is one year. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service
Major Duties:
Qualifications: Basic Requirements: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience or substitution of education for experience or combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet the following requirements: EDUCATION: 1year of Post Graduate work. A master's degree. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. In order to qualify, you must first meet Pathways Recent Graduate Program eligibility: You must have, within the previous 2 years, completed all educational requirements for a qualifying associate, bachelor, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution which may include Registered Apprenticeship Programs, Job Corps, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps; or intended graduation is no more than 9 months from date of application. -OR- Veterans (as defined in 5 U.S.C. 2108) who, due to a military service obligation, were precluded from applying to a Recent Graduates Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period may have their eligibility period extended so that they receive the full 2 years of eligibility. The remaining 2-year eligibility period will begin upon his or her release or discharge from active duty. The veteran's eligibility period may not extend beyond 6 years from the date of completion of all requirements of an academic course of study. AND You qualify for the GS-09 level if you are a Recent Graduate and possess one of the following: You qualify for a GS-9: Completion of 1 full year of graduate level education, and a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. Specialized Experience for a GS-09: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis regular basis. Experience developing detailed specifications to support maintenance and repair of shipboard systems. Experience analyzing, evaluating, developing and integrating detailed construction and installation plans. Experience developing procurement documentation for various projects. OR Education: Successfully completed 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement that is directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
