Job Purpose:

As an EHS Specialist, this individual will be responsible for establishing, implementing, managing, and continuously improving the environment, health, and safety programs for the facility. This specialist will have broad knowledge of EHS compliance programs and EHS specialty areas including Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, and Risk Management.

 

As Environmental Professional, this individual will be responsible for the implementation of Haleon’s Environmental strategic objectives & targets and the management of related Environmental programs.

 

The EHS Specialist Environmental Role will provide guidance in managing budgets to support outside services and operating expenses. The role includes strategic EHS planning as well as a tactical role for site wide EHS systems, EHS regulations, and best practices.

 

There is also a need for this person to have understanding and knowledge to lead and support Safety at the site as it relates to key areas such as confined space, process safety, machinery safety, electrical and utilities safety, injury and illness prevention, incident investigation (RCA), risk assessments, regulatory compliance, internal auditing, EHS training, and behavioral safety. 

An Environmental Specialist is a professional who focuses on ensuring that the site is following all federal, state, and local environmental regulations including all Haleon related environmental standards. These regulations apply to air, water, soil, waste, and sustainability requirements as they pertain to the site and associated properties.  The primary goal is to prevent environmental exposures by protecting employees and the company through recommending strategies and solutions to minimize exposure to harmful elements and conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as they apply to the protection of the environment including all company assets.
  • Complete all required Environmental Regulatory and Haleon reporting requirements on time and follow-up immediately regarding any gaps in compliance.
  • Develop and monitor a compliance calendar system which will ensure that all required environmental reporting requirements are submitted on time.
  • Coordinate compliance with environmental regulations including liaison with regulatory agencies and inspectors.

2. Environmental Risk Management

  • Established programmes to identify, assess and control environmental exposure risks to air, water, soil, and waste as it pertains to the site.
  • Develops strategies and programmes to manage exposures and control environmental hazards to meet applicable regulations and company standards.
  • Manage the site’s compliance in handling and disposal of hazardous and infectious waste.
  • Establish programs to manage the site’s different EHS risks and impacts, coordinated within an overall EHS management system.
  • Review change proposals (including capital projects and new product introductions) to identify potential EHS issues and participate in their resolution.

3. Incident Investigation & Auditing

  • Review and track investigations of injuries, illnesses, environmental releases, non-injury accidents and near-misses to ensure that they are effective, and that they identify and resolve root causes. Lead investigations into serious adverse events.
  • Carry out regular workplace inspections and audits to monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and company and site policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Coordinate the completion of job safety analyses and risk assessments.

4. EHS Policy, Strategy & Performance

  • Establish site EHS policies, objectives, key performance indicators and targets that reflect local needs and alignment with Haleon’s short and long term EHS strategy. Ensure local EHS SOPs effectively comply with Haleon’s overall EHS management system.
  • Monitor and analyze EHS performance and initiate action to support or correct trends.

5. Training & Collaboration

  • Design, conduct and oversee EH&S training.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues at other Haleon sites in North America and around the world to ensure that EHS best practices and lessons from adverse events are shared effectively.
  • Helps create a work environment where effective controls are in place to maintain compliance with environmental standards.

Skills and Competencies:​

Essential

  • Bachelor ‘s degree in related discipline (e.g. environmental engineering, environmental sciences, Engineering, General Sciences).
  • 1-3 years of experience in the Environmental Field, managing Environmental risks in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), Pharmaceutical or related high-hazard sector.
  • Membership of a relevant and internationally recognized professional organisation (e.g. NAEP, AAEES).

Preferred

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Registered Environmental Manager (REM)
  • This position requires knowledge of Safety and Environmental requirements and regulations. Hence any formal education around these requirements is preferred.
  • Knowledge in the use of Environmental tracking databases.
  • Good relationship building and networking, to engage effectively with site personnel, senior management, EHS and Regional leads.
