The Opportunity
This position works out of our Costa Rica – Alajuela location in the EP Division. In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
As the EHS Section Leader, you will be responsible, under general direction, for the ongoing management and continuous improvement of Environmental, Health and Safety, Sustainability and EHS compliance programs.
The role facilitates resources for strategic, EHS process improvement projects in conjunction with site goals and imperatives for increasing the EHS performance and outcomes. The role is accountable for delivering tactical results from the application of local (government) and external (corporate) EHS regulations and standards. Ensuring that the company meets and complies with all applicable corporate and local EHS standards and regulations. Ensure Management and full compliance of Abbott EHS technical and managerial standards.
What You’ll Do
- Formulate and develop the Site EHS compliance strategy. Develop programs and controls to ensure Abbott EP/SH Costa Rica complies with EHS local government authorities, certification entities and/or corporate officers.
- Design, coordinate and lead permanent on-site EHS inspections, supervision, and audits programs, ensuring they lead the Site to the consolidation of a high performance EHS Culture.
- Evaluate and ensure that ALL EHS procedures are updated and compliant with all applicable local and international EHS laws through knowledge of appropriate regulations. Manage changes and assure timely alignment.
- Lead the compliance assurance process for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly EHS metric reports to corporate and all other applicable stakeholders.
- Lead the continuous improvement process of the Inspection and Compliance verification program of the facility (Check List Program)
- Acts as a cross-functional change agent to drive and sustain EHS business process improvement for the site business units in support to the corporate division EHS strategy. Lead the contractor’s management – EHS performance continuous improvement process. Support the corporate social responsibility initiatives.
- Act as an EHS mentor, role model and coach in the implementation of EHS excellence and best practices.
- Lead the assigned EHS staff and orient them to identify and evaluate potential hazards and risk, offering technical advice and suggestions and recommendations for corrections to be applied. Supervise assigned EHS Specialists, Analysts and Technicians, in order establish, support, and maintain the Environmental, Health and Safety programs for Abbott.
- Lead the continuous improvement process of ALL EHS Management Systems. Assuring planning, registration, preparation, and successful results within all relevant EHS audits, assessments, competitions in and out the country.
- Lead and assure the continuous improvement process of the Site EHS risk assessment, assuring that ALL relevant EHS Training Programs are developed, delivered, and recorded on a timely and effectively manner.
- Supervise the directly/indirectly assigned EHS Staff in order establish, support, and maintain the EHS programs for Abbott.
- Reports to local EHS senior management on the performance and outcomes of the EHS, Sustainability & Compliance programs for review.
- Lead the support given to the interface with the corporation to achieve defined EHS goals and ensure site complies with local legislation. Assure transparency and efficient financial/budgetary EHS Department resources management.
- Develops and articulates a strategic vision for areas of responsibility. Leads assigned portfolio by developing, communicating, and building consensus for goals and programs that support division, business unit and company objectives. Direct communications about EHS strategies, targets, and objectives within Abbott.
- Direct the establishing, maintaining and continuously improvement process of all EHS programs. Assure full compliance with all safety and environmental permits and licenses required for Abbott site operations, by determining and leading the safety & health risk assessment and support the EHS team in developing risk control measures.
- Lead the process of establishing, maintaining and continuously improve all compliance, conformance, and assurance processes to meet with EHS regulations and standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety.
- +10 years of experience in related positions.
- +8 years leading EHS Management Systems
- +8 in years leading EHS regulatory and corporate standards compliance.
- Experience developing EHS policies and procedures in EHS, assuring their alignment with governmental and corporate regulations.
- ISO 14001, ISO 45001 Lead Auditor Certified
- Project Management skills. People leading skills
- Critical hazards control, sound technical knowledge; Must have solid knowledge in OSHA Industry Standards, Ergonomics and Environmental Management.
- Experience with emergency response, life safety and LOTO/Machine guarding.
- Computer skills. Use PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheets, and/or Microsoft Project.
- Proven track record of leading high-performance teams. High accountability.
- Advanced command of English language (required).
Shift Admin (Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm)

Preferred Qualifications
- Registered as profesional engineer at the CFIA.
- Must be able to work with all levels of management and staff.
- Demonstrate leadership, ownership, time management and teamwork skills, customer focused orientation and decision-making skills. Desired previous experience in medical industry.
