The Registered Nurse accesses medications from the medication store room. These medications are stored between ground and overhead height, either in shelving on the walls, in cupboards or in a fridge. The Nurse will collect the required medication which is loaded on a trolley to be transported to the patient’s room. The Nurse will then administer the medications and injections as required. The Registered Nurse will also complete intravenous medications, which involves lifting the Imed machine (weighing approximately 5 kg) and attaching this to the IV pole, this is then pushed to the patient’s bed side for administering.
General Observations:

Transfers may require operation of a hoist, sit / stand machine or hoover jack. A Nurse will either walk alongside a patient in a supervisory manner or provide minimal hands on assistance. A patient may also be transported between the ward and theatre in the bed. This requires the bed to either be pushed manually or a bed moving machine may be utilised, which allows the Nurse to walk alongside the bed, without the need for pushing.
Bed making:
The Nurse is required to remove dirty linen from patient’s beds, retrieve clean linen from the storage cupboard and then make the bed. The linen is stored between ground and head height and blankets can weigh up to 5 kg. The linen is carried to the patient’s bed and bilateral upper limb use and trunk flexion is required when making the bed.
