Role summary
To assist with the rapidly growing business in Korea, Research Asia, part of ING Wholesale Banking, is looking to hire a Senior Economist based in Seoul.
As the Senior Economist for Korea (and Japan) your purpose is to provide written and spoken analysis and forecasts for the Korean (and Japanese) economy. This is a macroeconomic position, but the role will also require analysis and forecasts for local financial markets as well as political developments. You will provide coverage for the Japanese economy too.
Together with the Asia Research team, you will provide relevant forecasts, insights and research that empower our Wholesale Banking colleagues to better serve our clients, as well as promote the reputation of ING.
The Asia Research team consists of 4 FTE.

- The Asia Research team is part of ING Wholesale Banking and functionally part of the Global Economic Research department
- The team is working with key internal stakeholders and offers an environment which provides a regional overview of macro-economic trends and sector forecasts.
- ING Wholesale Banking Asia Pacific has main offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, Sydney and Seoul and is part of a global franchise

As the Senior Economist for Korea, you will
- Provide forecasts on key macro variables and market forecasts for flagship publications
- Assist with morning briefing for sales/trading on Korean/Japanese market/macro developments and other internal support where required
- Produce regular written reports on key Korean/Japanese data releases – previews and reviews
- Produce country “deep-dives” on Korean economy and topical subjects (e.g. demographics, sustainability, long term growth etc.) to support internal and external clients
- Produce local language content for Korean audience in addition to English language content for main research distribution channels
- Foster good relationships with media and promote the ING franchise locally and to an international audience
- Support the local business with client presentations, seminars panels and conferences where appropriate
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Economics or a closely related field; PhD preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an economist ideally within the financial industry
- Strong written and spoken English; excellent communication skills
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and open to revising views as new information emerges
- Strong collaboration skills with Relationship Managers and Product / Financial Markets teams
- Ability to forecast key macroeconomic indicators (GDP, inflation, policy rates) and financial market variables (FX, bond yields)
- Knowledge of econometrics and experience with media or public engagement are advantageous
- Independent mindset with a collaborative approach
