PURPOSE OF JOB:
The primary responsibility of the Driver is to safely and efficiently transport specimens from hospitals to the laboratory while providing superior customer support to our clientele.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to company Driver and Safety policies and all applicable Ontario regulations
Comply with the Highway Traffic Act and all applicable provincial and municipal traffic laws.
Follow applicable health and safety legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
Proper route preparation (coolers, ice packs, biopsy bags, vehicle inspection checklist in accordance with Ontario vehicle safety requirements).
Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any defects as required under Ontario regulations.
Timely delivery and pickup of client supplies and specimens to the appropriate destination.
Maintain specimen integrity at all times, including the use of approved specimen transport bags and temperature-controlled containers when transporting specimens from client offices or lock boxes to the vehicle.
Ensure compliance with applicable standards for the transportation of biological materials.
Efficient and timely completion of assigned routes.
Follow route schedules/sequences while accommodating special or urgent pick-ups as required.
Utilize company logistics software for route pickups. This may require data entry and photo documentation to notify management of completed pickups or issues.
Operate vehicle safely at all times and maintain a valid Ontario Class G (or appropriate class) driver’s licence in good standing.
Maintain a driving record that meets company and insurance requirements.
Ensure route is started with proper equipment and tools (carry bag, coolers, cellphone, keys, door hangers, reports, etc.).
Complete late return documentation when actual time of arrival (ATA) exceeds estimated time of arrival (ETA).
Complete and use “We Were Here, But No Specimens Available” notices when required.
Maintain courteous and professional interactions with clients and colleagues.
Communicate promptly with the Transportation Supervisor regarding route issues, delays, incidents, or safety concerns.
Represent the organization in a professional and positive manner at all times.
Comply with all company processes, including timekeeping, attendance, punctuality, and safety requirements.
Assist with other duties relevant to transportation services as assigned.
Maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Employees are expected to ask questions, seek guidance, and report concerns or violations of company policies or ethical standards through established reporting processes.
Education and Experience
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent (e.g., GED).
Minimum of three (3) years of driving experience.
Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence (or higher, if required).
Clean driver’s abstract (Motor Vehicle Record) acceptable to company insurance standards.
Experience in courier, medical, or laboratory specimen transportation is considered an asset.

Ability to lift up to 11 kg regularly and occasionally up to 18 kg.
Ability to carry up to 18 kg for several minutes at a time.
Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, twisting, pushing, and pulling.
Good vision with sustained visual attention to detail, including low-light conditions.
Ability to maintain balance and coordination.
Ability to communicate effectively in English with clients, supervisors, and colleagues.
Work Environment
Majority of time spent operating a motor vehicle.
Work may involve entering laboratory environments where biohazards may be present.
Work performed under close to moderate supervision.
General instructions provided for routine work; detailed instructions provided for new assignments.
Exposure to varying weather and road conditions typical in Ontario.
