Focus of the Role

The Driver and Vehicle Safety Manager is a specialist role accountable for uplifting driver and vehicle safety outcomes across Telstra’s nationally distributed Field Services fleet. This role plays a critical part in preventing serious injury and protecting the public, ensuring driver and vehicle safety is not just a compliance obligation, but a core part of how work is planned and delivered at Telstra.

What You’ll Do

Global Networks & Technology – The role works closely with Fleet Management and Safety Security & Wellbeing (SSW), to design and deliver simplified, practical and effective safety solutions that enable people to get home from work safely, every day.

Critical Risk Leadership & Governance

  • Support the Telstra Executive Sponsor for Driver and Vehicle Safety as a Critical Risk, including stewardship of agreed critical risk controls and assurance activities.
  • Maintain and lead the Driver and Vehicle Safety Community of Practice, with cross Telstra membership.
  • Simplify and uplift governance arrangements so that key driver and vehicle safety controls are clear, visible, owned and routinely tested for effectiveness.
  • Contribute to remediation activities arising from internal and external audits with a strong focus on control clarity, verification and line of sight to risk reduction.

Solution Design & Delivery

  • Apply human centred design to develop driver and vehicle safety solutions that reflect how work is performed in the field.
  • Use Agile delivery approaches to design, test and iterate solutions that embed safety controls into everyday workflows.
  • Lead delivery of key initiatives addressing fatigue, distraction, journey planning, vehicle suitability and in vehicle technology.
  • Ensure solutions are simple, practical and scalable across a large, geographically dispersed workforce.

Operational Enablement & Simplification

  • Streamline and simplify driver and vehicle safety processes, focusing on “back to basics” controls – what we control for, how we control it, and how we know it’s working.
  • Embed driver and vehicle safety risk controls into the flow of work, reducing reliance on standalone processes or manual compliance activities.
  • Work with operational leaders to ensure safety expectations are clear, understood and achievable in real world field environments.

Training, Capability & Engagement

  • Uplift and rationalise driver and vehicle safety training, ensuring content is relevant, current and aligned to operational risk.
  • Act as the Field Services representative for driver and vehicle safety learning and capability programs.
  • Partner with SSW and Fleet to ensure training, guidance and tools align with policy, standards and critical risk requirements.
  • Drive engagement through practical communication, consultation and continuous feedback from frontline teams.

Collaboration & Influence

  • Work closely with the Fleet Management team to align vehicle standards, specifications, technology and assurance activities.
  • Partner with SSW to ensure consistency with the Safety Management System and critical risk framework.
  • Influence across multiple stakeholder groups, including employees, contractors and delivery partners.
  • Support leaders to understand their role in preventing serious incidents and protecting the public.

About You

  • Cert IV, Diploma or tertiary qualification in Workplace Health & Safety, Risk Management, Transport Safety, Human Factors or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with vehicle fleets and driver safety, preferably in a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong understanding of driver and vehicle risk, including fatigue, distraction, journey planning, vehicle standards and in vehicle technology.
  • Proven experience delivering operational safety solutions for a field based or mobile workforce.
  • Experience embedding safety controls into systems, workflows or operational processes, not just policy.
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to work across organisational boundaries.
  • Strong analytical capability, including the ability to interpret safety data, audit findings and assurance outcomes.
