As a Donor Coordinator, you will coordinate all activities related to organ donor allocation, procurement, preservation, and transplantation. In this role, you will work closely in the OR with surgeons and the transplant team, ensuring all required documentation is prepared, receiving organs upon arrival, and assisting the surgeon with organ pumping and preservation, often overnight, to prepare for surgery.
A caregiver in this position works nights + on-call shifts from 12:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Assess availability of organ offers, evaluates quality of donor organ, manage procurement, transportation and transplant logistics, and is available 24/7 for DonorNet call.
Serve as resource for organ recovery and preservation.
Prepare organs for perfusion and monitor preservation parameters during the process, recording pressures, flows and taking test samples.
Assist with data collection and quality.
Assist with maintenance of transplant waiting list.
Complete all follow up requirements related to transplant.
Act as a liaison to Organ Procurement Organizations.
Comply with OPTN/UNOS requirements.
Complete and submit donor documentation with host OPO and OPTN/UNOS.
Assist with maintenance of transplant waiting list.
Prepare equipment, solution and drugs for procurement, preservation and transplantation.
Maintain cleanliness of preservation and research labs.
Maintain sterile techniques for organ preservation.
Perform data entry into EMR and electronic database.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Degree or diploma from accredited nursing school
OR Associate's Degree in Allied Health
OR Paramedic certificate
OR graduate of an approved MA or ORT program
Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Three years of clinical experience in OPO (organ procurement organization), tissue bank, transplant center, or operating room experience
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) obtained within one year of employment
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand in operating room for long periods and light lifting (40lbs).
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
