ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Donald B. Prell Special Collections Visiting Fellow at The Claremont Center for Engagement with Primary Sources (CCEPS) at The Claremont College Library (TCCL) will work on a research project that incorporates items in special collections such as the Trelawny Collection, archival collections, and digital collections. Working with both analog and digital methodologies, the Fellow will engage with these primary source and/or archival collections at TCCL by arranging and describing a collection, researching and curating an exhibition in the library or online, or designing and implementing a scholarly digital project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Collections research

  • Conducts research in Special Collections and Archives and the Claremont Colleges Digital Library using analog and digital methodologies. Research outputs could include describing and processing a collection; curating an exhibit in the library or online, or designing and implementing a scholarly digital project. Contributes bimonthly post to CCEPS blog, “Out of the Box”

Special Collections and Archives team

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree; must be currently enrolled in Master’s degree or PhD program

Experience:

  • Experience with primary source research
  • Formal coursework or training in rare books, archives, and/or special collections librarianship
  • Knowledge of information systems for researcher discovery as well as relevant cataloging and metadata standards
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment, particularly in higher education, libraries, or cultural heritage institutions

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of information systems for research discovery.
  • Strong organization, time management, and planning skills. Effective at meeting deadlines, adjusting priorities, and working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Open to learning and developing new skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and researchers from many different communities.

Preferred Experience:

  • 1-2 years work experience or instruction in rare books and special collections
  • Formal coursework or training in digital humanities
  • Knowledge of national and international metadata standards and schemas
  • Language skills reflecting one or more strengths of SCA collections: Latin, Spanish, French, German, or Italian
  • MLIS degree

Work Schedule: The regular hours for this part-time position are 20 hours for up to 20 weeks, scheduled between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit.

COMPENSATION

Pay: The pay rate for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position, $20.00 per hour.

Benefits: Due to the temporary nature of this position, it is only eligible for the following benefits: California Sick Leave, workers’ compensation, disability, Medicare, and social security, subject to the terms and conditions in the plan documents/policies.
