Distinguished Engineer – Cloud Engineering and Architecture

RI - Woonsocket Full time

At CVS Health, we’re building a world of health around every consumer and surrounding ourselves with dedicated colleagues who are passionate about transforming health care.

As the nation’s leading health solutions company, we reach millions of Americans through our local presence, digital channels and more than 300,000 purpose-driven colleagues – caring for people where, when and how they choose in a way that is uniquely more connected, more convenient and more compassionate. And we do it all with heart, each and every day.

We are recruiting for a Distinguished Engineer specializing in Cloud Engineering and Architecture. In this high-impact role, you will lead the architecture, design, and implementation of cutting-edge cloud platforms and services that underpin our digital transformation initiatives across healthcare and retail ecosystems. This role demands a systems thinker who thrives in large-scale enterprise cloud environments, prioritizes architectural excellence and innovation over tactical implementations. You need to have a proven track record of building enterprise cloud platforms from scratch. You'll drive the evolution of cloud-native architectures as the foundation for business growth while ensuring seamless multi-cloud operations, enterprise-grade security, and operational excellence across AWS, Azure, GCP, and hybrid cloud environments. You will serve as a thought leader and mentor for engineering teams, ensuring our cloud strategy is robust, innovative, and aligned with evolving business objectives.

Major Responsibilities

You will make an impact by:

1. Strategic Cloud Architecture & Engineering Leadership

  • Drive the end-to-end architecture for highly scalable, resilient cloud platforms spanning multiple cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP), ensuring alignment with business goals in healthcare and retail while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Partner with other Distinguished Engineers, Architects, and executive leadership to shape the long-term cloud engineering roadmap, with specific milestones for cloud modernization and cross-cloud integrations.
  • Champion best practices for cloud-native design, high-availability, performance optimization, security, and cost efficiency across all cloud environments.

2. Cloud Platform Development & Innovation

  • Oversee the design and development of new cloud-native platforms from the ground up, setting the standard for cloud engineering excellence and architectural patterns in large, complex enterprises.
  • Implement advanced cloud services architectures including serverless computing, microservices, event-driven systems, and API-first designs for scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Foster an engineering culture that values cloud-native principles, engineering excellence, and continuous innovation in cloud technologies.

3. Multi-Cloud Strategy & Emerging Technologies

  • Provide thought leadership on multi-cloud and hybrid cloud strategies, including workload placement optimization, cloud portability, and vendor risk mitigation across diverse cloud ecosystems.
  • Evaluate and architect solutions using emerging cloud technologies including edge computing, AI/ML cloud services, and next-generation cloud-native services.
  • Understand how to leverage cloud services for competitive advantage while maintaining architectural flexibility and avoiding vendor lock-in.

4. Cross-Functional Leadership & Technical Excellence

  • Serve as a key technical advisor for executive leadership and product leaders, translating complex cloud architectural decisions into clear business value propositions and strategic technology investments.
  • Mentor and coach senior cloud engineers and platform teams, elevating the organization's overall cloud engineering proficiency and best practices.
  • Cultivate a strong and collaborative culture, promoting open communication, knowledge sharing, and innovation in cloud engineering practices.

5. Enterprise Cloud Governance & Operational Excellence

  • Ensure adherence to enterprise cloud governance frameworks, regulatory compliance, and industry standards, advocating for secure-by-design and compliance-by-design principles.
  • Guide implementation of cloud financial management, cost optimization strategies, and resource governance frameworks aligned with business objectives.
  • Identify architectural risks and propose mitigation strategies in alignment with corporate security, compliance, and operational requirements.

The candidate will have a strong work ethic, be a self-starter, and be able to be highly productive in a dynamic, collaborative environment. This position offers broad exposure to all aspects of enterprise cloud engineering, as well as significant interaction with business leaders. The candidate will be expected to have the following key attributes:

• 12+ years in cloud engineering and architecture with 8+ years in large-scale enterprise environments.

• Proven experience building cloud platforms and architectures from scratch (not just migrating existing applications to cloud).

Deep expertise in:

  • Multi-Cloud Platform Engineering: AWS (EC2, Lambda, EKS, RDS, S3), Azure (Virtual Machines, Functions, AKS, SQL Database, Blob Storage), Google Cloud (Compute Engine, Cloud Functions, GKE, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage) with deep architectural knowledge across all major cloud providers.
  • Cloud-Native Architecture Patterns: Microservices design, serverless architectures, event-driven systems, API gateway patterns, distributed systems design, and cloud-native application development frameworks.
  • Infrastructure as Code & Automation: Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager (ARM), Google Cloud Deployment Manager, Pulumi type platform for comprehensive infrastructure automation and version-controlled infrastructure management.
  • Cloud Security & Compliance: Identity and Access Management (IAM), Zero Trust architectures, cloud security posture management (CSPM), data encryption strategies, compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS), and security automation.
  • Container & Orchestration Platforms: Docker, Kubernetes, managed container services (Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, Google GKE), service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd), GitHub Actions and cloud-native CI/CD pipelines.
  • Cloud Data & Analytics: Data lake architectures, cloud data warehousing (Amazon Redshift, Azure Synapse, BigQuery), real-time streaming platforms (Kinesis, Event Hubs, Pub/Sub), and ML/AI cloud services integration.
  • Cloud Networking & Connectivity: Virtual Private Clouds (VPC), software-defined networking, hybrid cloud connectivity (AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, Google Cloud Interconnect), content delivery networks, and global load balancing.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Cloud-native monitoring (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Google Cloud Monitoring), distributed tracing, log aggregation, performance optimization, and SRE practices for cloud environments.
  • DevOps & Platform Engineering: GitOps workflows, automated deployment pipelines, infrastructure testing, and self-service developer platforms for cloud-native development.
  • Cloud Cost Optimization: FinOps practices, resource rightsizing, reserved instance management, spot instance strategies, and automated cost governance frameworks.
  • Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: Multi-region architectures, automated backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, RTO/RPO optimization, and business continuity frameworks.
  • Problem-solving mindset: Ability to architect complex cloud solutions and deliver pragmatic, scalable solutions for enterprise-grade challenges.
  • Leadership: Track record of mentoring cloud engineering teams and driving cross-functional alignment in complex cloud transformation initiatives.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
