Director, Value Creation (Data, Analytics, and AI)

British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is seeking a Director, Value Creation (Data, Analytics & AI) to serve as our subject matter expert for AI and data-driven value creation across our ~$35 billion Private Equity portfolio. You'll lead transformative data initiatives for select portfolio companies, participate in investment due diligence, and advise C-suite executives and boards on data strategy while building frameworks that enable our deal teams to capture data-driven opportunities.

This high-impact role offers the opportunity to shape value creation at one of Canada's premier institutional investors, and will be based in our office in New York.

The opportunity

The Director, Value Creation (Data, Analytics & AI) is a senior leadership role within the Value Creation team, reporting to the Director, Value Creation. This position serves as BCI's subject matter expert and strategic leader for AI and data-driven value creation across our portfolio companies.

The Director provides strategic guidance for analytical, data science, and AI support to our portfolio companies, and operates at a strategic level, working with senior leaders and orchestrating resources across organizational boundaries to deliver results.

This role is responsible for:

  • Participating in data and analytics due diligence, evaluating the attractiveness of potential investments

  • Leading data, analytics, and AI value creation for 2-3 portfolio companies with direct ownership, while supporting additional companies with high data and analytical needs

  • Collaborating across BCI to mobilize resources from corporate data, technology, deal teams, Value Creation colleagues, and external stakeholders

  • Establishing guardrails, best practices, and frameworks that enable the Private Equity team to ensure rigorous evaluation and value creation planning related to data, analytics, and AI

  • Supporting portfolio-level data, analytics, and AI initiatives that advance the Private Equity strategy and BCI's strategic pillars: growing AUM, accelerating innovation, and operating at global scale

What you bring

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative field

  • 10-15 years of progressive experience in data science, analytics, or AI/ML roles including leadership of large-scale data transformation programs that delivered measurable outcomes

  • Experience in private equity value creation, operational leadership (VP/SVP level) at data-driven organizations, or management consulting at senior levels

Technical Expertise:

  • Deep expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, and other data science activities as well as knowledge in data architecture, governance frameworks, and modern data tools (SQL, Python, R, cloud platforms, and analytics platforms)

  • Strong understanding of emerging AI technologies (generative AI, large language models, computer vision, natural language processing) and ability to assess practical business applications

Business Acumen & Value Creation:

  • Strong commercial orientation with ability to understand business models, translate technical capabilities into value drivers, and prioritize initiatives based on ROI and strategic impact

  • Proven track record of partnering with C-suite executives and management teams to develop and execute data strategies that deliver measurable commercial value

  • Ability to assess where data, analytics, and AI can create competitive advantage and drive bottom-line results

Leadership & Stakeholder Management:

  • Exceptional ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries, build trust and credibility with business leaders, influence diverse stakeholders without formal authority, and mobilize resources in matrixed environments

  • Outstanding executive presence and communication skills, with ability to discuss business strategy, financial implications, and technical solutions with equal fluency

  • Extensive experience building trust and credibility with business leaders (CEOs, CFOs, COOs) and technical leaders (CTOs, CDOs)

  • Strong influencing skills to align diverse stakeholders around data-driven approaches and secure investment in initiatives

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in related quantitative field or MBA from top-tier institution

  • Deep functional-specific expertise with understanding of industry-specific value creation levers and business dynamics

Who you will work with

The Private Equity department manages a diverse international portfolio of approximately $35 billion in global private equity investments comprising of fund, direct and co-investments. Portfolio growth over the coming years will be driven by an increased emphasis on direct investment, strong partner relationships and actively creating value from the portfolio to deliver superior returns for our clients. 

Our department currently consists of ~75 professionals spanning offices located in Victoria, London and New York City, organized into six sub-teams: Direct Investments, Fund Investments, Venture & Growth, Value Creation, Reporting & Analytics, and Operations. Our Direct Investments team can be further broken down into six sector-focused teams that cover the Business Services, Consumer, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrials, and Technology, Media & Communications sectors.

Value Creation

With a growing focus on direct investments and hands-on value creation, the Value Creation team partners closely with sector and functional teams to deliver operational excellence, accelerate growth, and drive innovation across the portfolio. The team has three main accountabilities:

  • Capability Hub: serving as a trusted partner to sector teams, institutionalizing knowledge and sharing expertise that de-risks investments, accelerates performance and delivers measurable value across the portfolio, including developing robust value creation plans for our investments.

  • Governance: establishing and upholding governance frameworks that define clear standards, foster accountability, and ensure disciplined execution of value creation activities across the portfolio.

  • Selective execution: Implementing targeted value creation projects that align with the team’s core strengths and specialized knowledge

Total rewards

Compensation for this position consists of base salary and incentive. The base salary range for this New York-based role is US $240,000 – $330,000. The base salary offered will consider factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set and level of experience applicable to the role. Incentive compensation represents a significant proportion of the compensation package and is determined on company and individual performance.
