Purpose of the Role
The Director, Talent Advisor – Legal provides regional coordination of the Firm’s Talent Advisory services for Legal Professionals including career management, capacity management, performance management, compensation management, and talent management.
The Director, Talent Advisor – Legal role is works with all Lawyers and Agents in our Vancouver office including those in both the Disputes and the Business Law practices. This role reports to the National Directors, Talent Advisory – Legal.
Success is delivering proactive value added advice, guidance and service to BLG Legal Professionals to ensure that the firm is optimizing the contribution of its most valuable assets; its people and that the Firm is able to attract and retain top talent within the legal services sector in Canada.
The Director, Talent Advisory - Legal is responsible for helping BLG attain a market-leading reputation as an employer of choice by developing the most innovative and creative human capital solutions to be a market leader in the industry. The incumbent will work closely, as an integrated team, with the Directors, Talent Advisory - Legal across each BLG office to ensure a coordinated and aligned approach in all of the responsibilities outlined below.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Advisory
Support legal professionals in navigating their careers within the BLG Talent Framework.
Deliver a market-leading performance management process and encourage the development of a culture of contemporaneous feedback to support the career development of BLG professionals.
Work closely with the National Group Heads, the National Directors Talent Advisory, the Regional Managing Partner and Regional Group Managers to align capacity with the demand for legal services ensuring that all legal professionals are engaged and underperforming professionals are managed appropriately.
Support the lateral Partner recruitment process led by the National Director, Talent Advisory - Legal and the onboarding and integration in their Practice Groups of new joiners to the Firm.
Manage associate departures, conduct exit interviews, and manage the relationship of legal professionals leaving the BLG platform.
Collaborate on national talent projects; ensure a regional perspective is considered in the development and implementation.
Compensation
Oversee the annual compensation process for associates in the region, collaborating with the Regional Director of Finance and National Directors, Talent Advisory - Legal as required.
Talent Management
Contribute to the development of a framework for ensuring BLG professionals are being actively managed to ensure their career expectations are being met and, in partnership with the National Director, Talent Development, are experiencing professional and personal development which allows their potential to be achieved including a nationally consistent framework for identifying, managing and retaining top talent at the Firm.
Communication and Integration
Liaise on a regular basis with the National Directors, Talent Advisory - Legal to provide relevant information regarding professionals in their practice groups, on-site talent activities and to obtain support for resolution of strategic talent matters.
Meet regularly with other regional talent team members to ensure consistency across the regions.
Facilitate decision-making and resolution of issues across the region and ensure regional deployment of national initiatives.
Provide key support as a strategic advisor to the Regional Managing Partner and Regional Group Managers meeting regularly to discuss issues and opportunities and, facilitating decision making and resolution of issues across the region.
Meet regularly with Business Services leadership team in the region, ensuring communication and integration of regional activities including the implementation of national Firm strategies and processes on the regional level.
Key Competencies
Former practicing Legal Professional or Professional with experience gained in consulting firms or equivalent professional services business
6+ years of progressive Professional Development experience, preferably in a management role
Highly-developed interpersonal, communication, organizational and time-management skills
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with people at all levels
Outstanding client relationship management skills, particularly with Partners of the Firm
Strong operational management focus, ensuring high quality work product, on time and in-budget delivery
Proven track record of management, organizational, delegation, time management and supervisory skills
Highly-developed analytical and problem solving skills
