Director / Senior Director, gRED and Computation BD Lead, Digital & Data

We are seeking a highly strategic and technically proficient individual to join our Digital & Data Partnering team to lead business development and strategic partnering activities for digital, data, and AI capabilities supporting Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) and the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CSCoE).  This position combines the core responsibilities of a Business Development Project Lead (BDPL), driving the evaluation and execution of complex external partnering opportunities, with a strategic focus on aligning Genentech gRED and CSCoE digital and data priorities. 

The Opportunity:

The position serves as a key bridge between Pharma Partnering and gRED’s scientific and computational organizations, translating emerging external innovation in data science, AI/ML, and automation into high-impact partnerships aligned with gRED’s research priorities and long-term technology roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Business Development Leadership: Lead the end-to-end evaluation and execution of strategic partnerships, collaborations, and acquisitions across digital health, computational biology platforms, AI/ML technologies, automation systems, and large-scale data assets supporting R&D.  Identify and shape external innovation opportunities that enhance gRED’s capabilities in multimodal data analysis, foundation model development, lab automation, and AI-enabled scientific discovery.

  • Stakeholder Interface: Serve as a trusted partner to senior leadership across gRED, Computational Sciences, and Pharma Partnering to align external innovation efforts with internal scientific priorities and evolving digital strategy.

  • Strategic Prioritization: Collaborate with gRED and CSCoE leadership to shape and prioritize BD activities that accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge data and AI platforms, ensuring they support RED’s scientific and therapeutic area (TA) strategies.

  • Deal Sourcing & Execution: Lead the end-to-end evaluation and execution of strategic partnerships, collaborations, and acquisitions across digital health, computational biology platforms, AI/ML technologies, automation systems, and large-scale data assets supporting R&D.

  • Technical Due Diligence (DD): Direct and manage the cross-functional due diligence process, ensuring deep technical assessment of data quality, platform scalability, model validation, and cybersecurity/privacy compliance.

  • Strategic Fit: Maintain deep awareness of the rapidly evolving AI, data, and digital biology ecosystem to identify emerging technologies and partnership opportunities that can strengthen Roche’s competitive position in R&D.

  • Internal Alignment: Drive internal alignment and decision-making across a complex stakeholder landscape, helping shape Roche’s approach to build-vs-buy decisions in areas such as AI infrastructure, automation, and advanced data platforms.

(Qualifications and Experience)

One position but two possible levels/positions, based on qualifications.

Director, RED and Computation BD Lead, Digital & Data  (SE8)

  • Degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science. Plus an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MBA, MD, or Master's) in business or one of these technical fields.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or digital health industry, with a substantial portion in Business Development, Corporate Development, or Strategic Alliances focused on technology, data, or digital assets.

The expected salary range for this position, based on the primary location of California, is $180,800 - $335,800

Or, Senior Director gRED and Computation BD Lead, Digital & Data

  • Degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Science. Plus an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MBA, MD, or Master's) in business or one of these technical fields.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or digital health industry, with a substantial portion in Business Development, Corporate Development, or Strategic Alliances focused on technology, data, or digital assets.

  • Proven experience in leading and executing complex, cross-functional due diligence projects for technology or data platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and influence senior stakeholders in a complex, matrixed organization.

Skills:

  • Deep technical understanding of data science principles, AI/ML methodologies, and their application in drug discovery and development.

  • Familiarity with data governance, patient data privacy (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR), and data licensing frameworks.

  • Exceptional strategic thinking, project management, stakeholder leadership, communication, and presentation skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $202,900-376,700. 

Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
