Job Summary - Director Research Operations

Leads and manages complex teams of clinical research professionals to develop and execute innovative clinical trials and studies to support Corewell Health patient population. Directs and oversees programmatic and administrative aspects of all research activities within the Corewell Health Research Institute (CHRI). Works with the VP of Research Administration in partnership with research leadership to coordinate complex research clinical trials/studies in collaboration with service line leadership, and identify research opportunities and protocols. Serves as a key representative person for industry and academic partners, including meeting with key external stakeholders when on hospital campuses. Is a key spokesperson in the scientific community, meeting with key physicians and scientists to promote research initiatives and achievements. Key responsibilities include leading complex research and teams, supporting all FDA/regulatory requirements, providing key insight into research study challenges, supporting CHRI investigators, providing financial oversight over the clinical research portfolio and leading key strategic initiatives for CHRI. Works in partnership OSP/SPA to identify grant opportunities and apply for awards; partners with regulatory/study start up teams; and leads service line research meetings in collaboration with department/service line leadership. The director, clinical research operations establishes and maintains policies and standards works for research operations; directs managerial and/or supervisory leaders in daily research operations; partners with compliance, education and training teams. Oversees the ethical and regulatory aspects of clinical research to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and guidelines. Provides oversight over the applicable regional research portfolios, including ability to interpret enrollment data and financial trends to ensure overall study success. Understands and appreciates both an employed and non-employed medical group nuances.

Essential Functions - Director Research Operations

  • Works in partnership with service line(s) leadership to direct managerial and/or supervisory leaders in research operations, including oversight of study performance, ongoing analysis of monthly financial reports and overall service line(s) research portfolio, and maintains effective communication with service line(s) and executive leadership to address any financial, administrative or compliance issues in a timely manner. Develops and manages budgets for clinical research projects, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources. Provides insight into research contracts; understands and interprets research contractual agreements.
  • Works in partnership with Corewell Health's VP of Research Administration and research leadership team to develop and grow research programs across Corewell Health. Collaborates with healthcare providers and stakeholders to identify research opportunities and develop protocols while evaluating for resource dependencies.
  • Works with research leadership and teams across Corewell Health to develop policies and standard work in order to promote best practices across the enterprise. Organizes and facilitates meetings and committees to address clinical research issues within the research community.
  • Oversees research operations for new and existing Principal Investigators to include management and allocation of resources such as clinical research nurse/specialist/assistant support, space, facilities, and equipment. Establishes and maintains procedures and guidelines for all aspects of setting up preclinical and clinical space (lab(s)/facilities/equipment) for new Investigators. Assists with medical student, resident and fellow scholarly activity projects; supports GME research training programs through curriculum development.
  • Leads complex research teams and provides oversight for regional-specific clinical research managers and supervisors. Fosters a positive and collaborative work environment to promote teamwork and maximize the productivity and efficiency of the clinical research team. Creates a culture of inquiry, support, and inclusion; leads team-building activities to create a unified research team. Collaborates with other key research leadership positions within CHRI to increase communication, cohesiveness and unity. Develops, implements and evaluates programs to promote the recruitment, retention and continuing education of the research staff.
  • Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis. Participates in compliance related matters and regularly monitors research activities to ensure quality of data and performance of clinical trials. Keeps executive and management team abreast of issues, progress and risks related to trial operations; escalates issues to executive leadership when appropriate.
  • Communicates and presents research findings and outcomes to various audiences, including healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public. Participates in marketing and communication committees to promote clinical research within Corewell Health and with external media.
  • Assesses organizational processes associated with trial execution and identifies ways to improve and streamline internal procedures; assesses quality of data and performance of clinical trials and develops action plans to address performance gaps; continuously evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical research processes and procedures. Monitors/analyzes trends in clinical research for future research projects.

Qualifications - Director Research Operations

  • Required Bachelor's Degree Healthcare, business, or related field
  • Preferred Master's Degree
  • 7 years of relevant experience Clinical research experience including progressive responsibility in research coordination in a patient care setting
