The University of Miami/UHealth MSOM Office of the Dean has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Director, Research Laboratory to work at the UHealth campus in Miami, Fl.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Director, Research Laboratory ensures the effective technical and administrative management of laboratory functions to meet the institution’s goals of patient care, education, and research. Further, the incumbent provides leadership and mentorship to scientific operations staff and guarantees compliance with rules and regulations.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for institution’s laboratory services.
2. Monitors and directs all accreditation, regulatory, and licensure requirements.
3. Writes and updates procedures and manuals and reviews them annually to ensure that employees have current information needed to perform tests and procedures.
4. Works closely with hospital staff, department management, and physicians to ensure the highest standards of quality and service.
5. Collaborates with upper management to identify areas of opportunity and implements plans of action.
6. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Lead and oversee research initiatives focused on neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, ensuring alignment with departmental and institutional goals.
Direct the Biospecimen Team in the collection, cataloging, and processing of patient bio-fluids, maintaining high standards of efficiency and regulatory compliance.
Independently manage the processing of blood samples across multiple offsite locations, including procurement and logistics of specialized equipment and reagents.
Develop, implement, and monitor laboratory regulatory practices, safety protocols, and chemical inventory systems.
Coordinate and execute laboratory relocations, collaborating with vendors, facilities, architects, project managers, and IT to ensure seamless transitions and optimal equipment placement.
Initiate and establish advanced cell culture protocols, including human induced pluripotent stem cell and murine primary neuronal cultures, and train laboratory staff in these techniques.
Plan and conduct complex animal experiments, including drug administration, surgical procedures (e.g., intracerebroventricular injections), tissue harvest, and behavioral assays, ensuring rigorous data analysis and compliance with ethical standards.
Oversee the implementation and training of advanced laboratory techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, microscopy, digital slide scanning, FISH, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, MSD, and antibody purification.
Maintain active communication with vendors to secure optimal equipment and supply procurement, supporting ongoing research and operational needs.
Foster a culture of mentorship and professional development within the laboratory team.
