The Quantitative Investment team manages approximately $20B CAD of active equity strategies.  The team employs a hybrid fundamental-quantitative approach, investing based on fundamental principles and implementing through a rigorous quantitative process.  The team has both internal and external clients across multiple distribution channels and manages product spanning ETF, Mutual Fund, Pool Fund and Separate Managed Accounts etc.

The team is looking for a Senior Quantitative Portfolio Manager to join an existing high performing team.  This position will be highly integral in all aspects of the investment process, including research and portfolio management, as well as contribute to overall team strategy and business development efforts through growing and servicing both internal and external channels.  The role is based in Toronto.

Primary responsibilities include:

Investments

  • Managing and executing a fundamentally driven, quantitatively implemented active equity investment process
  • Managing quantitative portfolios with overall responsibility for positioning, trading decisions, investment performance, and internal and external client communications
  • Performing quantitative and/or  fundamental analysis to understand and validate proposed trades, as well as portfolio exposures
  • Generating investment insights to be tested and implemented in the areas of stock selection, portfolio construction, and risk management
  • Working with fundamental research analysts within the firm to translate investment insights into a systematic, data-driven investment process
  • Overseeing and executing quantitative research projects
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to improve the investment process
  • Overseeing platform development including production, research, and attribution capabilities, as well as new data sources and new analytical techniques

Business development

  • Represent our process to internal and external clients:  educate internal sales and client service teams, meet with existing and potential clients in the institutional and retail channels, and become a trusted thought partner with internal channels including Multi Asset and Wealth channels

Leadership and management

  • Help drive the business direction and growth strategy for the Canadian business
  • Represents the business to internal and external constituents, including product, sales, client service
  • Develop and mentor junior members of the team

Education/experience:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in active quantitative equity
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working as a portfolio manager in active quantitative equity
  • Experience with quantitative equity investment experience required
  • Experience working with clients required
  • Graduate degree in business (MBA), finance, economics, mathematics or similar field preferred
  • CFA charterholder or CIM required

The ideal candidate has:

  • Desire to work on a fundamentally driven, quantitative implemented active equity investment team
  • Strong understanding of quantitative investing
  • Portfolio management experience
  • Leadership and management experience – the ability to drive a business forward, identify and execute on a growth plan, and potentially manage junior team members
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail along with demonstrated technical skills
  • Strong presentation skills, including the ability to articulate complicated investment concepts in a way that resonates with various audiences, including consultants, institutional clients, and retail channels
  • Comfort with technology and programming, with coding experience in R, Python, Matlab, and/or SQL attractive but not required

Salary:

$120 400,00 - $224 000,00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
