Job Summary
This position is responsible for strategic direction and oversight for all payroll and financial accounting, compliance and various employee benefits financial processes of qualified, nonqualified, and various other programs within a multi-billion-dollar payroll and benefit related environment. The role ensures accurate payroll accounting and benefit/financial benefit accounting, strict adherence to regulatory requirements, and effective financial management of benefit programs including assurance of any related investment recording. The Director partners with internal leadership, external auditors, governmental agencies, trustees, actuarial firms, record keepers, and investment managers to safeguard financial integrity and deliver transparent, compliant reporting.
Job Responsibilities:
- Oversees and directs staff including supervisory/management staff subordinately assigned to these related functions assuring consistent harmonious deployment (and employee-customer relationships) coverage of Payroll Accounting & Compliance Oversight– Direct payroll accounting operations, including reconciliations, general ledger integration, and reporting.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and global payroll tax requirements, internal controls, and audit standards.
- Benefits Financial Management– Oversees accounting, reconciliation, and reporting for qualified and nonqualified benefit plans, including pension and 401(k). Ensure timely and accurate benefit expense recognition and liability reporting.
- Audit & Regulatory Governance– Leads coordination with internal/external auditors and regulators to validate payroll, benefits, and investment compliance; oversee preparation of filings such as Form 5500 and Summary Annual Reports (SAR).
- Investment & Actuarial Partnership – Collaborate with Treasury, Trustees, investment managers, monitors, and actuarial firms to ensure alignment of financial strategy, funding, and compliance with corporate and plan requirements.
- Cross-Functional Leadership– Partner with Treasury, Financial Reporting, Budgeting, HR, and other business units to provide insights, forecasting, and compliance guidance on payroll and benefits costs including allocation/charge back processes.
- Systems, Reporting & Process Improvement– Drive automation and modernization of payroll accounting and compliance systems; maintain financial databases and ensure accuracy of statistical, management, and government reporting
- Responsible for the coordination of efforts between internal and external auditors/audits related to the procedures, controls, compliance, and reporting.
- Ensures the coordination with various Recordkeepers and Monitor Consultants to maintain the alignment of investment policy and practices as well participates in the investment allocation and style/manager selection process.
- Coordinates with outside Actuarial Firms, Record keepers, Vendors and Trustees responsible for Plans as appropriate.
- Partners with Treasury/Financial Reporting and Financial Benefit Admin as required and conducts ad-hoc research and reporting.
- Forecasts, calculates, record-keeps and monitors all corporate fringe benefit pool budgets, including active employee, retiree and health pools.
- Oversees the proper and timely processing of payments of benefit deductions to appropriate vendors using defined accounts. Responsible for the development of automated systems related to the processing of qualified benefit plan data as well as data interfaces to all necessary internal Financial systems and external vendors, consultants, trustees or advisor systems.
- Oversees the maintenance of statistical records of all payments for use in company analysis and governmental reporting as well as the forecasting, calculation, record-keeping and monitoring all corporate fringe benefit pool budgets, including active employee, retiree and health pools.
- Oversees the accurate recording of accounting entries relating to company expense of benefit and payments of benefit liabilities for each division’s fringe pool(s), including reporting and budget analysis and variances validation. Provides review support as needed.
- Directs all benefit expense data processes including accumulation, reconciliation and verification.
- Develops and manages the ongoing maintenance of Medicare D Drug Subsidy database. Responsible for the support and preparation of subsidiary companies during audits.
- Responsible for the control, record-keeping, monitoring and safeguarding of all financial aspects of the Pension Plan(s) and 401(k) Plan(s) for members of the control group of the corporation, which may include one or more of the following: contributions, distributions, loans, benefit computations, anti-discrimination testing, compliance, accounting reconciliation, and government reporting. Provides analytical documentation, including investments to levels of management.
- Oversees the reconciliation process of various benefit liability accounts and the proper reporting of documentation to Financial Reporting, as well as the preparation of 5500 and Summary Annual Reporting (SAR) governmental reporting.
- Develops and maintains knowledge of the related Financial Systems and financial aspects of cloud-based systems.
Required Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in Mathematics or Accounting
- Minimum 10 years of experience in employee benefits administration and or Payroll accounting/compliance
- 5 years proven supervisory experience
- Proven experience in payroll tax compliance, accounting reconciliations, and audit coordination
- Analytical skills and financial acumen
- Organizational skills and experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Verbal and written communication skills, including grammar, appropriate word choice, precision, conciseness, structure, appropriate tone and level of detail for audience
- PC experience and skills to include spreadsheets and such software packages as Microsoft Excel and Word
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree preferably in Business, Accounting, Finance, or Business Analytics
- CPA, CFP, CFA
- Employee training/mentoring experience
- Cloud-Based Financials systems and HR experience
- Claim/membership and documenting systems experience

The compensation offered will vary depending on your job-related skills, education, knowledge, and experience. This role aligns with an annual incentive bonus plan subject to the terms and the conditions of the plan.

Base Pay Range
$133,400.00 - $247,700.00
