Director of Enterprise Strategy & Engineering

Job Description

The Director of Enterprise Strategy & Engineering is a senior leadership role within the CTO function, accountable for shaping and delivering high‑quality engineering and future‑focused technology strategy across M&G. The role elevates the strategic leadership capability of the CTO organisation and ensures technology operates as an enabling service to the business.

Acting as a catalyst for transformation, the role aligns enterprise technology strategy with business objectives to deliver outcomes including competitive advantage, operational excellence, and sustainable growth. Working in close partnership with senior business and technology leaders, the role champions innovation, inclusion, and collaboration, ensuring technology investments are tightly linked to measurable business and customer value.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, communication, and execution of a multi‑year enterprise technology strategy aligned to M&G’s business goals and transformation agenda.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Chief Technology Officer and executive leadership, providing insight on technology trends, innovation, and strategic investment opportunities.
  • Oversee the integration of enterprise technology strategy with business strategy, investment planning, and enterprise change initiatives.
  • Translate strategic plans into prioritised, outcome‑focused roadmaps based on business impact and value.
  • Lead Cloud and Platform engineering teams, ensuring high‑performance, high‑quality engineering practices and products that meet business needs.
  • Ensure close collaboration with Security Engineering and Operations teams to maintain stable, secure, and resilient technology foundations.
  • Govern enterprise innovation initiatives, including pilots and proofs of concept, ensuring successful scaling of high‑impact outcomes.
  • Provide oversight of enterprise‑wide innovation activity and technology patterns, working closely with Enterprise Architecture leadership.
  • Communicate technology vision, progress, and outcomes clearly to executive leadership, the Board, and key stakeholders.
  • Build strong partnerships with strategic suppliers, ensuring alignment with M&G’s innovation and value objectives.
  • Lead and develop engineering leaders, fostering an inclusive, high‑performance culture that values diversity of thought and continuous improvement.

Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience shaping and executing enterprise‑scale technology strategy and engineering initiatives within complex organisations.
  • Demonstrated success delivering business outcomes through digital transformation and technology‑enabled change.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, with the ability to translate technology opportunities into measurable business value.
  • Broad understanding of modern and emerging technologies, including cloud, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms, and their business applications.
  • Proven ability to engage, influence, and advise senior stakeholders, including executive leaders and Boards.
  • Experience building and leading diverse, high‑performing, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience operating in financial services or similarly regulated environments is desirable.
