NOTE: This role is based in Newark, NJ and New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the Newark, NJ and SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.
THE OPPORTUNITY
As the Payroll Director at Scholastic, you will support and manage all aspects of the employee payroll process from preparation, records maintenance, recording general ledger activity and monthly/annual filing and reporting. You will also work closely with a staff of five to lead day-to-day activities and help shape the payroll function by implementing system and process improvements. Leading payroll interactions with outside groups, such HRIS, Legal, Finance, Benefits and Human Resources is critical.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage payroll processes for multi-state and multi division US payroll, via Workday in a Shared Service Environment.
Work closely with staff of five to lead day-to-day activities.
Prepare and Execute Payroll Filings for Federal, State and Local taxes.
Work closely with HRIS, Finance, Legal, and Human Resources.
Reconcile payroll and payroll taxes.
Ensure Compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations and labor laws.
Perform periodic audits of the payroll system data to ensure accuracy of employee pay information. Design and implement process improvements and internal controls to the payroll process.
Lead all aspects of the monthly financial reporting process as it relates to payroll related items. Produce additional reporting as needed for other internal and external reporting purposes on employee headcount and payroll related information.
Process annual Bonus and Stock recordings.
Manage UKG Dimensions timekeeping integration.
Resolve payroll issues, both externally and with employees.
Partner with Legal to provide information for SEC reporting and Proxy filings.
Fidelity Reporting.
Miscellaneous Integrations for benefits and New Hire Reporting.
In performing the above, exercise the highest degree of confidentiality relative to all payroll information and employee privacy initiatives.
Assist with International payroll implementations as needed.

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)
10 plus years of extensive experience and knowledge of the payroll function, including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes for mid to large size organizations.
7 plus years exp with driving payroll strategy and process improvements Passionate about improving processes and developing innovative solutions
Payroll tax compliance expertise
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Ability to manage confidential information with discretion
Reconcile payroll and payroll taxes and the related balance sheets accounts to the General Ledger.
Proven excellence in developing / revamping internal operations
Experienced reliable, able to make independent decisions, and to juggle multiple tasks and priorities effectively
Have a strong sense of ownership; you don’t shy away from the details and you’re committed to completing each task with a high degree of accuracy
Tech savvy, with a strong understanding of the landscape of Workday and UKG Timekeeping systems
Proficiency in advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
