Your New Role

CNN is seeking a Director of News, Video, to join its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong to take a leading role in helping to shape the world’s biggest and most important stories.

This is a role for an ambitious, capable and experienced video-first newsroom leader with outstanding news judgment, excellent communication skills, and a passion for breaking news and distinctive enterprise reporting that differentiates CNN.

Your Role Accountabilities

  • As Director of News, Video, you will help set the global news agenda for CNN during Asia hours, working closely with senior leadership to respond in real-time to unexpected developments, making decisive video-first editorial decisions in a highly pressurized deadline driven environment.

  • You’ll bring proven high-level broadcast and/or video-first news experience and the ability to distill complex ideas, demonstrating a deep understanding of global and regional affairs, as well as a willingness to adapt to meet evolving audience needs across digital platforms.

  • You will have a broad portfolio and will be expected to move between reactive and proactive depending on the situation; working closely with senior leadership you will be able to execute complex coverage plans and help coordinate field team deployments, communicating across teams and time zones on multi-region news, scoops and investigative projects.

  • You will be an expert communicator and adept at working in a highly collaborative multi-platform news environment, partnering closely with digital-first editorial news desk editors and reporters; regional bureaus; specialist content verticals; as well as show teams; commissioning editors; and digital video and social teams.

  • You will take a lead in crafting original, distinctive video-first enterprise reporting; reviewing scripts; overseeing the production and post-production of video content; as well as the sourcing and clearing of high value video; while ensuring all journalism produced adheres to CNN standards and integrity; and partnering with editorial leaders to align international reporting with network-wide priorities and standards.

  • You will have proven management skills and the ability to provide motivation, guidance, and mentorship to team members to foster growth and development.

  • Though the role is located in Asia-Pacific, you will be working as part of a global, 24/7 cross-platform team, providing a key editorial link between CNN’s US and Europe operations, including on weekends when required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of newsroom leadership experience, with a strong editorial vision and deep knowledge of global news.

  • A proven track record of leading teams during major breaking news; superior news judgement; calmness-under-pressure; and the ability to deliver in a deadline driven environment.

  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills with a demonstrable track record of executing detailed coverage plans and delivering on day two reporting targets.

  • Expert communicator; solutions-minded with the ability to solve problems creatively and navigate disagreements constructively to achieve common goals; adept as working within a highly collaborative international team environment.

  • Experience conceiving and producing distinctive enterprise journalism, identifying unique reporting opportunities and/or investigative works.

  • The ability to think in smart framings, while always considering the intended audience.

  • College degree or equivalent industry experience.

  • Perfect grasp of written and spoken English.

  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and a desire to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
