Director of Laboratory Services, Community Memorial Hospital

The Director of Laboratory Services provides administrative and financial leadership, oversight and management to Laboratory, Blood Bank and Pathology Departments at the community hospital and clinics, and as requested, regional sites affiliated with VCUHS. Responsibilities include strategic planning; regulatory compliance; financial and resource management; relationship development and communications; staffing; and all support services of the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: 
Certified as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by either the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the American Medical Technologists (AMT) association, or equivalent.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment including CPR, etc.:
Certified as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by either the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the American Medical Technologists (AMT) association, or equivalent.

Experience REQUIRED:
A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant clinical experience with five (5) years of progressive leadership or management experience.

Experience PREFERRED:
Seven (7) years of supervisory/management experience in a clinical laboratory
Knowledge/Experience with CAP accreditation through College of American Pathologists
Knowledge/Experience with CLIA

Education/training REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or closely related field from an accredited program.
Knowledge of laboratory operations to include: pathology, hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and microbiology.
Knowledge of regulatory standards for CLIA, CAP, and JCAHO.

Education/training PREFERRED: 
Master's Degree in Clinical Lab Science, Healthcare Administration, or closely related field

Independent action(s)/decision making required:
All day-to-day operations of the Departments are handled independently.
Advice and guidance are sought from the VP on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity outside the Departments.
Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and leadership of staff.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):  
All community hospital laboratory management positions report directly to the Director.

Additional position requirements such as shift rotations, weekends, environment, etc.:
Requires visibility to enhance staff communication, effectiveness and morale.
Will work in conjunction and in coordination with the VCUHS Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Departments.
