With input in all phases of the construction project, the Director of Field Operations - Grocery will lead the General Superintendent / Superintendent team(s) to ensure consistent delivery of quality projects while surpassing customers’ expectations. The role will engage with Business Development, Estimating, and Project Management efforts throughout the project life cycle, from early opportunity through closeout. The role is to manage the Grocery General Superintendent team and reviews. It assists in reviewing bid documents and original project budgets for constructability and profitability. Assists in the day-to-day execution of all Grocery projects, including any emergencies, work delays, and other issues that may affect the completion of the project. In addition, the Director of Field Operations is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with current and prospective customers.

Oversees field personnel and their assigned construction projects. Assists in developing schedules with superintendents to meet the client turnover dates. Responsible for reviewing project schedules and ensuring all project milestones are achieved. Ensures projects stay on budget by reducing general cost overruns, lowering average punch list items, and improving contractual job completion dates.

The Director of Field Operations is to ensure the work is completed to the company's and the client's highest building standards. Shares in the responsibility for Company Safety Policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) standards to be followed by all persons on all job sites at all times.

Essential Job Functions

  • Receives direction from the VP of Construction or Sr VP of Construction regarding assigned responsibilities.
  • Manages team performance, including developing and coaching direct reports and staff, communicating expectations, enforcing Company and customer policies, procedures, and standards, and redirecting performance as needed.
  • Manages and supports Grocery customers’ activities with the collaboration of the Senior General Superintendents, Superintendents, Project Manager, and Division Manager.
  • Works with executive management, division managers, account managers, and Sr General Superintendents locally and cross-regionally to ensure consistency and quality on all projects, processes, and procedures. 
  • Assists with on-site safety implementation with labor, subcontractors, and the general public.
  • Assists with the preconstruction process, collaborating with Estimating, Project Managers, including reviewing project plans and specifications, site surveys, scope development, project budget, obtaining required permits, and coordinating the preconstruction agenda.
  • Assists in maintaining relationships with the Company team, clients, facility representatives, subcontractors, nearby businesses, and city officials.
  • Ensures that Superintendents follow Company policy concerning as-built plans, required job site paperwork, and related project documentation.
  • Trains Superintendents for continued growth and knowledge.
  • Works with each assigned Superintendent to ensure each understands and enforces the Company’s building standards.
  • Develops master schedules, project timelines, and milestones with project teams. Collaborates with Superintendents and General Superintendents to ensure schedules align with and meet client turnover dates.
  • Review project schedules and ensure project milestones are achieved by following mandatory Company schedule policies.
  • Walks projects to ensure that work is completed with quality and integrity to the highest Company standards, working directly with the General Superintendents and Project Managers.
  • Collects information from all parties involved in disputes and reviews plans and specifications to support the resolution of conflicts with subcontractors and vendors.   • Attends periodic project meetings to ensure the Company is up-to-date on the client and project requirements.
  • Ensures all personnel on job sites comply with Company Safety Policies, OSHA standards, and required incident reporting procedures. Provides leadership and guidance to the team to ensure safety requirements are consistently upheld across all projects.
  • Schedules performance reviews for employees assigned to the Director of Field Operations.
  • Assists in interviews and hires for General Superintendent and Superintendent.
  • Resolves unforeseen project conditions, including subcontractor challenges, along with project managers and executive management.
  • Mentors all Company employees by asking honest, appropriate, engaging questions, intently listening, and sharing experiences, pitfalls, and solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Skills 

  • Technical skills in the major trades:  plumbing, electrical, concrete, flooring, roofing, painting, framing, drywall, and finishing for doors, windows, and cabinetry.
  • Experience managing personnel, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • 5 - 10 years of construction or general superintendent experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and detailed specifications.
  • Must be able to read survey markings and civil sheets.
  • Proven track record of success with measurable achievements in leadership roles.
  • Experience managing commercial construction teams in all project facets, including onsite and offsite work.
  • Experience in scheduling, purchasing, estimating, team management, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Ability to sequence project schedules and scopes.
  • Ability to multitask and work with minimal supervision, possesses strong attention to detail, and excellent time management skills to ensure all established deadlines are achieved.
  • Ability to identify a need, remove barriers, and know how to achieve established goals.
