The Director of Exploratory Products has two main groups of responsibilities; 1) product development for new and / or difficult specialty gas products requested by customers, and 2) the full range of responsibilities of a facility / site manager in a specialty gas plant. In the product development function, key goals include direct interaction with customers, profitable revenue growth from non-standard products, specialty gas technology development and technology transfer, where possible. In the facility manager role, key goals include plant operation in full compliance with all safety, health and mandated operational rules, on-time and on-budget production fulfillment, personnel management and development, and budget / financials preparation and tracking.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Product Development
Interacts directly with end-user customers and Airgas regional personnel to discuss applications, address non-standard customer needs, and recommend products and services to fulfill those needs.
Determines the feasibility, technical approach and strategy for preparing exploratory products; carefully evaluates the behavior and risks associated with new or unusual combinations of chemicals from a safety, compatibility and reactivity perspective; drafts and approves procedures for new products before any work is started.
Serves as the design authority for new products; sets the product specifications, labor / material cost, recommended end-user price and lead time for new products; submits product details to Tech Support and PNCS for part number creation.
Carefully tracks incoming orders for proper ICT and retail pricing; maintains an accurate record of product throughput, transfer revenue and retail pricing.
Plans, oversees and tracks the day-to-day fulfillment of customer orders for non-standard products.
Effectively dovetails production schedules with development project work to achieve most efficient throughput and use of resources; responds appropriately to unexpected schedule requests.
Reviews results of completed work and checks accuracy / quality; generates custom certificates of accuracy and assures they are correct.
Seeks opportunities to improve production methods, quality of products, and speed and accuracy of equipment / analyzers; stays abreast of new technology for gas handling, gas purification, cylinder treatment, blending and analysis; makes recommendations for capital improvements and initiates implementation where appropriate.
Supervises all of the personnel in the group and fosters a positive, collaborative and open-minded culture; provides for training, guidance and personal development opportunities for subordinates; implements cross-training to create backups for critical capabilities.
Works “hands-on” in the Exploratory Products lab on an as needed basis.
Maintains collaborative and cooperative relationship with the SG02 plant and staff.
Facility Management
Plans, directs and has ultimate responsibility for all operations within facility, including safety, health, environmental, quality, production, analytical, distribution, material management, and maintenance.
Operates the facility in full compliance with Airgas safety, health, environmental, and quality policies. Prepares for periodic corporate audits (IMS, HSE, Quality, Fuel / Ox) in advance to assure maximum compliance; takes action to correct any findings or observations from those audits.
Develops, modifies or approves procedures to comply with new / unmet regulatory and company requirements.
Prepares and reviews time-based budgets (annual, quarter, month); maintains oversight and manages plants expenditures to ensure costs are adequately controlled; identifies / reports budget discrepancies and acts to minimize impact.
Directs required inventory inspections of supplies and equipment; maintains adequate supplies of cylinders, valves, raw materials and incidentals.
Develops and maintains positive relations with group and campus staff; communicates frequently and keeps staff informed on important / relevant company information; facilitates team events and activities.
Directs recruitment and training of new personnel as needed to ensure adequate levels of staffing and operating skills.
Observes and reinforces proper employee behavior and performance; conducts performance appraisals and safety engagements; creates development plans and recommends personnel for promotion.
Conducts periodic reviews of facility operating performance for compliance and possible improvement; evaluates and implements projects to improve safety, efficiency and productivity; manages changes to the facility, equipment, processes and procedures.
Maintains collaborative and cooperative relationship with the SG02 plant and staff.
Required Qualifications:
A college degree in chemistry, engineering or other physical science is required
8-10 years of relevant experience in the gas industry
Familiarity with safety and regulatory practices as defined by CGA, DOT, OSHA, EPA, SAFECORE and other business-related compliance activities is important.
Thorough knowledge of gas properties and related chemistry needed.
Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry principles (calibration, accuracy, etc.) needed.
In-depth knowledge of procedures for gas cylinders and valves, gas handling, cylinder treatment, gas mixture blending and gas analysis is required.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from associates, groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Good planning, organizational and communication skills.
Knowledge of cost estimation, scheduling and product price quoting systems.
Good computer skills; effective user of Airgas SAP, PPM, Google tools, MS Word and MS Excel.
Experience in management and supervisory skills managing a team.
Capable hands-on gas blending and analysis skills.
Knowledge of hazardous properties of chemicals.
Certifications and Licenses: Valid state driver's license.
Must be a self-starter, self-motivated, well organized and detail-oriented.
Must demonstrate dedication to product quality and customer satisfaction.
Physical Demands
Must have full sensory functions for safety reasons – see, speak, hear and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
Must have adequate motor skills – walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms.
Must occasionally move more than 125 pounds with the aid of material handling equipment.
Must be able to move, roll, connect, disconnect, open and close high pressure gas cylinders frequently.
Preferred Qualifications:
An advanced degree is preferred, but a 4-year technical degree coupled with demonstrated equivalent technical accomplishments may be acceptable.
