Job Description:

BW Papersystems is looking for an experienced and driven Director of Engineering that leads a 45+ person global engineering organization responsible for new product development, standard product solutions, and engineering support for the Folding Carton product line. This leader drives product innovation using Design for Excellence, Lean Product Development, strong visual management, and collaborative team practices to meet cost, performance, and lead-time goals. The role includes ownership of engineering process improvement, capacity planning, budgeting, design control, and talent development. The Director works cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Field Service, Product Management, global engineering, and senior leadership, and serves as a key member of the Southern Wisconsin leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead global engineering teams delivering new products, features, and software for the Folding Carton market.
  • Oversee engineering execution for CTO/ETO product solutions.
  • Guide engineering input for Aftermarket product development and launches.
  • Manage design review processes including safety, code compliance, and hazard/risk assessments.
  • Maintain and drive a continuous improvement roadmap for engineering.
  • Develop and track engineering performance metrics (utilization, innovation, effectiveness).
  • Manage engineering and R&D budgets; plan staffing to support growth strategy.
  • Apply Lean Product Development and visual management tools to ensure on-time product launches.
  • Support Product Management in market strategy and product planning.
  • Deploy Design for Excellence and systems engineering principles in new product architecture.
  • Engage in local leadership team activities and organizational decision-making.
  • Support Sales, Operations, and Field Service in customer problem-solving, warranty resolution, and technical solutions.
  • Promote employee development, mentoring, and succession planning.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or PE license) with 12+ years in design or R&D; Master’s preferred.
  • Solid track record in engineering leadership, successful project delivery, and innovation.
  • Strong technical background in industrial control systems, mechanical machinery design, and design-related decision making.
  • Experience with budgeting, root-cause analysis, and cross-functional problem-solving.
  • Ability to work with broad guidance and general objectives.
  • Domestic and international travel required.
