Under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety, the Director of the Communications & Security Technology Division of the Department of Public Safety provides leadership for all aspects of the division’s communications center, which coordinates multi-faceted security operations for the university via a 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point, a Central Alarm Center, and a Real Time Crime Center. The Director leads the team that is responsible for the delivery of all university public safety radio, emergency telephone transmissions and 9 -1-1 services as well as the monitoring of security, fire and environmental alarms and campus video systems. Division personnel also oversee, analyze and coordinate various data sources that support the work of the Real Time Crime Center including license plate recognition systems, CCTV footage, computer aided dispatch, drone-as-a-first responder operations and live-streams of body worn cameras. The division conducts security assessments of campus facilities and recommends appropriate security technology.
The Director is responsible for evaluating and implementing various security technology sources to allow the division to convert real-time data into actionable information that is communicated to first responders in the field. The Director provides overall administrative guidance for the division including preparing and administering the division’s budget, leading the management and training of employees, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and ensuring adherence to LEADS, FAA & FCC rules, regulations, certifications and licensing requirements. The Director participates in goal setting and establishing strategic initiatives for the Department of Public Safety.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. 10 years of relevant experience required.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 10 years of experience overseeing and managing people in a security operation, technology operation or communications center required. Knowledge of FCC rules, regulations and licensing requirements required. Demonstrated experience evaluating security technology and equipment needs and evaluating system components required. Knowledge of LEADS regulations and protocols desired. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form required. Must successfully complete background evaluation, and other pre-employment requirements and possibly thereafter. No conviction record for felony or crime of moral turpitude. Subject to 24 hour calls. Hours and days vary.
