Scope of Position
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC), The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients through teaching, research and patient care; and providing the community/region it serves with high quality services in cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation as one of the nation’s 10 free standing “cancer-only” hospitals. The James is the only cancer program in the country that features a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center aligned with a nationally ranked academic medical center on the campus of one of the nation’s largest public universities.
The Facilities Operations Management and Services Department leadership staff is responsible for overseeing and coordinating activities that support the delivery of high quality patient services and effective hospital operations for all James owned and/or managed facilities, including but not limited to the James Cancer Hospital, outpatient sites (Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza Tower, Mill Run GYN Oncology, James Outpatient Care West Campus, Outpatient Care Powell, and Bob Crane Community Center), and administrative centers (Ackerman Complex and Polaris Innovation Centre). The Department leadership staff collaboratively works with OSUWMC support services leaders, including Security, Facilities Operations, Environmental Services, Supply Chain, Health Facilities Planning, IT, Purchasing and The Ohio State University Facilities Design and Construction Department.
Position Summary
The Director James Operations - Facilities & Planning functions as an integral part of The James Facilities Operations Management and Services Department team by managing projects related to the James clinical space optimization. This team member develops standard workflows, translates construction impact plans for the operations team, communicates timelines and logistics for the James facilities team independently for approximately 80 active James construction projects ranging from $5K to $2B in construction costs.
Scope of responsibility is in excess of 2.06M Square Feet across 8 primary locations, providing 15K+ inpatient stays, 488K+ outpatient visits, 14K+ surgeries, 78K infusion, 59K radiation procedures, and 54K mammograms annually. Scope of services is anticipated to grow to nearly 3M Square Feet in the next 5 years. The expansion of The James Hospital and James space in the University Hospital Inpatient Tower will add 148 beds, establishing the James as the 2nd largest Cancer Hospital in America. Integral to bed expansion is unshelling activities for 4 new ORs, relocation of the IR suites, including prep/post unit, James Tower lobby redesign to improve patient satisfaction and security, building systems (pneumatic tubes, autonomous guided vehicles, telemetry, security system, building automation system) integration with existing James Tower to ensure campus wide uniformity, system-wide blood bank relocation, redesign and relocation of Observation Unit, Intermediate Care Clinic, Palliative Unit, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections Unit, Theranostic Clinic and enabling projects to accommodate departmental growth and realignment.
In addition, The Director James Operations – Facilities & Planning will play a pivotal role in major strategic investments to include a 500,000 square foot expansion to the James Outpatient Care West Campus facility, as well as integrating cancer clinical operations into Health System Ambulatory locations, strategic partner facilities, and leased spaces, and/or other James operational priority areas for growth.
The Director James Operations – Facilities & Planning will also play a key role in recapitalizing and increasing diagnostic imaging and therapeutic treatments by upgrading 12 Linear Accelerator, Cyclotron/3 Proton Rooms, Gamma Knife, PET Linac, 3 PET scanners, 13 CTs, 6 MRIs, Interoperative MRI, and Brachytherapy suite.
The Director James Operations – Facilities & Planning uses planning and hospital-based management expertise to provide departmental operations support including project/program management oversight, resource planning and development, procurement, organization, process improvement, standardization initiatives, policy development, progress reporting, issues management, change management, and complete special projects as it relates to space optimization, inpatient care flows, and patient care support. This position supports The James’ mission and values by coordinating and providing exceptional level of operational principles and analytical processes; and responsibilities include actively promoting relationship-based care in support of absolute customer satisfaction.
The Director James Operations – Facilities & Planning facilitates communication activities and problem solving, and supports an environment conductive to delivery of effective operations; and interacts with staff, physicians, and administrators/managers to continuously assess environmental issues, and establish and maintain quality control, appropriate business practices, and hospital operations guaranteeing compliance with life safety standards defined by Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other regulatory bodies.
The Director James Operations – Facilities & Planning facilitates organizational strategic planning initiatives, and is responsible for directing project management, resource planning and development, space requests and assignments, initiating process improvement activities, and leading multidisciplinary committee meetings that impact the high-quality health services delivery across the continuum of care for cancer patients. Responsible for the service level agreements between facilities, maintenance, and operational teams to ensure compliance and accountability.
The Director James Operations - Facilities & Planning will be supervised by the Senior Director of Operations, Support Services of the James and may have matrixed accountability to the Health Systems Facilities leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: Bachelor’s degree in Business or Hospital Administration or related field is required. Master's degree in business or Hospital Administration is preferred. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred. At least 7 years of experience in healthcare/hospital operations and construction projects is strongly preferred. Position requires leadership ability, excellent interpersonal skills, effective communications skills, and continued professional development. Extensive experience required in the areas of project management, data analysis and reporting, and process evaluation, planning, and improvement. Working knowledge of information systems and computer-based programs including spreadsheets, presentations, databases, word processing, reports, graphics, and web development.
