The Director, IT Communication and Engagement is a newly established leadership role within the Office of Information Technology (OIT), designed to strengthen communication, collaboration, and engagement across the technology organization and the wider university community.
This position leads the development and execution of strategies that inform, engage, and inspire both internal OIT employees and university stakeholders about technology initiatives that advance the mission. The Director serves as a strategic communications partner to technology leaders—translating complex information into clear, accessible messages, amplifying innovation stories, and fostering a connected, informed, and empowered technology culture. The Director also serves as the primary liaison between OIT and the internal Communications team—bringing forward technology initiatives and updates, collaborating on messaging, and partnering to determine the most effective university-wide channels and approaches for delivery.

By connecting the people who build UMGC’s technology with those who benefit from it, this role ensures OIT’s work is visible, valued, and aligned with the university’s strategic priorities.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Internal Technology Team Communications

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that keep OIT teams informed, engaged, and aligned on goals, priorities, and initiatives.

  • Partner with technology leadership to craft clear, consistent, and motivating messaging for staff meetings, newsletters, and internal platforms.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor on communication best practices, tone, cadence, and transparency across all OIT functions.

University-Wide Technology Communications

  • Coordinate the planning and delivery of technology-related communications within OIT, ensuring alignment and readiness for university-wide rollout of messages about new tools, system updates, and cybersecurity initiatives.

  • Partner with UMGC Communications and departmental stakeholders to shape messaging, develop campaign materials, and determine the most effective channels for promoting adoption and awareness of university technology.

  • Maintain and enhance OIT’s presence on the UMGC intranet (“The Source”), ensuring timely, accessible information about technology resources and updates.

Impact Storytelling & Innovation Communications

  • Showcase the impact of technology initiatives on the university experience through storytelling, success features, and thought leadership content.

  • Elevate OIT’s visibility by highlighting innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration across the institution.

  • Support OIT executive and leadership communications, including OIT town halls, strategic updates, and key announcements.

Culture, Engagement & Recognition

  • Develop programs and communications that foster a strong, inclusive, and collaborative OIT culture.

  • Partner with HR and L&D to promote engagement, recognition, and professional growth within the technology division.

  • Support employee engagement initiatives such as Agile Evolution

Change Management & Organizational Support

  • Partner with the technology team to plan and execute change management communications during periods of transformation.

  • Create and maintain messaging frameworks, FAQs, and leadership talking points for organizational updates and initiatives.

  • Drive awareness and adoption of digital engagement tools (Microsoft Viva, Teams, SharePoint) to enhance communication and collaboration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, information technology, or a related field

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in internal communications, employee engagement, or strategic communications, preferably within a technology-oriented environment, higher education, or large organizational environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proven success developing and executing communications strategies that align with organizational goals and drive engagement.

  • Experience working closely with senior management teams to align communications with organizational priorities and decision-making.

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics into clear, compelling messages.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with senior management and cross-functional teams to build trust and influence outcomes.

  • Experience managing content across digital platforms such as SharePoint, Teams, intranets, and email newsletters.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
