The Rare Disease Healthcare Director (RD HD) is responsible for leading a cross functional team whose responsibilities will be focused on supporting patients, caregivers, HCP and advocacy needs holistically within the Neurological Rare Disease (NRD) and Rare Blood Disorder (RBD) communities. The RD HD is tasked with ensuring both clinical and access questions are compliantly addressed for the patient, caregivers and HCP accounts including other geographically aligned stakeholders i.e. social workers, genetic counselors, health systems etc. in order to provide safe and effective patient care. Success in this role will require the RD HD to balance needs of multiple products, stakeholders and team member responsibilities based on specific local account and geography needs. They will need to strategically manage their business opportunities, lead highly integrated teams while maintaining individual customer accountabilities. The RD HD is responsible for leading and coaching roles across two therapeutic areas: the RBD team and the NRD team. The roles on these teams include the RBD Account Managers (RBD AMs), NRD Patient Assistance Liaisons (PALs), and NRD Account Managers (NRD AMs).
Summary of Direct Report Roles:
NRD Account Managers: Demand-driving with HCPs; reimbursement responsibilities; patient facing/advocacy responsibilities
RBD Account Managers: Demand-driving with HCPs and SPs; patient-facing
NRD Patient Assistance Liaisons: Patient-facing/advocacy responsibilities; reimbursement responsibilities
This is a field based role, it will cover 11 Western states (WA, OR, NV, NM, MT, ID, WY, AZ, UT, CO, AK) It is preferred that candidates live in the Greater Seattle, Denver or Phoenix areas due to business concentration. This is a field-based position with extensive travel required (up to 50%), including overnight or weekend commitments.
Key Accountabilities:
Deeply understand the unique needs of each rare disease customer in their pursuit of improved patient outcomes. The RD HD leads their team to support brand goals and targets by working closely with key business partners such as Brand Marketing, Sales Operations, Specialty Pharmacies and Commercial Training & Development, and Access Solutions among others.
Execute short-term priorities and strategic vision in the local ecosystem engaging in partnerships that improve the customer experience, improve patient outcomes and deliver on business opportunities for Genentech. Contribute to national therapeutic area strategies through sharing local insights and priorities.
Lead the development and execution of customer account planning for target account(s) to deliver maximum impact opportunities. The RD HD is a patient and community-facing role from both a player and coach perspective. Coaching to compliance for the unique rare disease roles that operate with specialized role guidance is a critical component of the RD HD role.
Build, lead and motivate a diverse team of people with deep functional and therapeutic area expertise. With the ecosystem leadership team, harness the collective expertise of the ecosystem team to engage effectively and compliantly across the ecosystem. Create and foster a culture that enables and requires employees at all levels to live our Operating Principles in all aspects of their work.
The RD HD could have portfolio account management and/or payer responsibilities based on the needs of the ecosystem. Would be assessed on a case-by-case basis and will be determined by what’s best for the customers and the patients we serve.
Experience representing the organization at weekend conferences and community events across the region; frequent weekend availability is required to align with the unique scheduling needs of the rare disease community.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree; MBA or other related graduate-level degree is preferred
Average of 8 or more years' work experience
A minimum of 3 years' previous field management experience, rare disease preferred, as well as leading cross functional teams including access & reimbursement and patient facing teams preferred.
Previous account management or alliance/partnership management experience, including developing and implementing account plans for various health ecosystem players (e.g., health system or hospital), is a strong plus
Previous cross-functional industry experience in commercial life sciences (pharma or biotechnology) or related industry engaging with key healthcare ecosystem players (e.g., payers, health systems), is required
Proven track record for consistently meeting or exceeding financial and/or other quantitative targets, as well as qualitative goals
Previous direct to patient, clinical education or rare genetic disease experience strongly valued
Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
In addition to passing Genentech's background screening, the employee must submit to and pass additional background screening as required by some institutions and health facility sales accounts (additional screening requests may include but are not limited to background checks, immunization, TB, HIV, hepatitis, and drug screening)
Business travel, by air or car, is regularly required, weekend work with patient groups is regularly required
Complies with all laws, regulations, policies and procedures that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

This is a field-based position. Overnight travel may be required. This position requires significant driving of either a company provided or personal vehicle as well as prolonged periods of sitting, both of which are part of the essential duties and responsibilities of the role. As a result, Genentech, Inc. (Company) from time to time will check your motor vehicle record for purposes of determining your eligibility for driving a Company vehicle or driving any vehicle on Company business.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Seattle is $209,900.00 – $389,900.00. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position is eligible to earn incentive compensation that is calculated and paid in accordance with the applicable Incentive Compensation Plan for the role.
