Director, General Account Derivatives

The General Account CIO Office (GAO) is looking for a Director to work within its Fixed Income team to help direct and oversee its derivative portfolio. The GAO is responsible for the oversight and management of the General Account (“GA”) portfolio, an approximately $320 billion portfolio to support its retirement product liabilities. The portfolio is invested across public and private fixed income asset classes, commercial mortgages, private equity, real estate equity, and real asset investments. Within the GAO, derivatives activity is used for setting and directing hedging and yield enhancement strategies for the GA across interest rates, currencies, and credit.  This position reports to the Deputy CIO/Head of Fixed Income and is responsible for evaluating new fixed income and derivative strategies, monitoring investment activity, authorizing investment transactions, collateral management, running the FHLB Funding Agreement program, and providing subject matter expertise on capital markets and relative value within derivative asset classes. The position assists the Deputy CIO/Head of Fixed Income for the General Account in executing these responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead all derivative activities including overall strategy, thought leadership, accounting designations, collateral maintenance and staying abreast of industry trends
  • Coordinate with Nuveen trading on implementation and maintenance of all derivative strategies
  • Coordinate with Accounting to ensure proper accounting treatment of all derivative trades
  • Coordinate with Risk Management, Treasury and Actuarial where appropriate
  • Monitor investment performance and investment activity of General Account derivatives to measure income and hedging benefits
  • Serve as the derivative subject matter expert for the GAO and across the broader TIAA including presentations to senior leadership and board level investment committee.
  • Ideal candidate will have experience across a broad set of derivatives in a life insurance framework and an understanding of collateral management, risk and accounting implications across asset classes.
  • Lead the strategy and operations of the FHLB funding agreement program
  • Participate in all asset allocation and fixed income strategy discussions that help drive performance of the GA
  • Participating in product level required solutions to help deliver income outcomes in collaboration with the Asset Allocation Team.

Base Pay Range: $138,000/yr - $160,000/yr

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location.  In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
