Job Description Summary:

The Director, Facilities Maintenance & Infrastructure is responsible for directing the day-to-day operation and management of all building systems, utilities, and plant operations within assigned facilities at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities, this position ensures reliable, efficient, and high-quality maintenance and operational support of building infrastructure, central utility systems, and energy management functions that sustain the institution’s mission of education, research, and healthcare delivery.

Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee daily operations of all assigned maintenance zones, central plant systems, and utility infrastructure to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable performance.

  • Manage general utilities operations, including steam, chilled water, domestic water, electrical distribution, and related infrastructure supporting campus facilities.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities in planning major capital projects and infrastructure upgrades; provide budgetary, personnel, and resource recommendations to ensure long-term operational efficiency.

  • Conduct regular inspections of ongoing maintenance, repair, and plant operations to ensure adherence to performance, safety, and regulatory standards.

  • Serve as the departmental liaison for all maintenance and plant-related projects; resolve scheduling conflicts, cost discrepancies, and quality concerns.

  • Ensure full utilization of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for preventive maintenance, asset tracking, and operational reporting.

  • Develop organizational staffing plans and ensure that employees with the appropriate experience and skills are hired, onboarded, trained, supervised, have individual goals and development plans; Conducts annual performance evaluations and where necessary implement appropriate employee discipline.

  • Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, and refrigeration regulations, as well as all applicable environmental and utility reporting requirements.

  • Champion a culture of safety and accident prevention through proactive training, proper equipment use, and continuous improvement of safety programs. Oversee and maintain safety programs through regular training, proper equipment use, and continuous evaluation of safety procedures.

  • Promote a culture of ownership, respect, and empowerment among staff, ensuring responsiveness to facility and campus needs while supporting departmental and institutional goals. Foster accountability and professionalism among staff to ensure timely, effective support of facility and campus operations in alignment with departmental and institutional goals.

  • Ensure area employees conduct activities in a professional and ethical manner, and in accordance with KUMC Policies and applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Ensure all work performed by employees in the area is done in a safe and secure manner.

  • Direct coordination of area work with other areas of KUMC to ensure integration and support of KUMC goals and objectives.

  • Maintain personal level of subject matter expertise necessary to ensure the area activities are carried out on a best practices basis.

  • Participate in and/or lead appropriate committees, task force, or other similar activities assuring optimal resource utilization.

  • Ensure that necessary electronic data collection, storage and retrieval systems are implemented and used by area personnel in an appropriate fashion.

  • Maintain departmental certifications desired by KUMC.

  • Ensure the confidentiality of medical center, employee, and patient information. Handle sensitive data with discretion and in accordance with KUMC policies and legal requirements.

Required Qualifications

 

Work Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in building or mechanical trades (e.g., maintenance, construction, alteration, and repair of buildings, grounds, utilities, and central plant systems). Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Five (5) years of experience in facility operations management for a large, complex physical plant (e.g., university, healthcare, or multi-building campus).

  • Five (5) years of experience supervising a large, multidisciplinary workforce across skilled trades.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a closely related field.

Work Experience:

  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, or management of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and utility distribution systems and components.

  • Experience with energy management, central plant operations, building automation, and CMMS/Asset Management systems.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
