Grade Level (for internal use):
13Director, Engineering Execution & Quality Enablement
Experience: 15+ years
Level: Director (L13)
Role Summary
As a Director, Engineering Execution & Quality Enablement, you will lead large‑scale execution focused initiatives that deliver automation, platform reliability, and consistently high customer outcomes across a complex engineering portfolio.
This role is not a traditional Quality Engineering leadership position. Instead, you will act as a hands‑on execution leader who ensures that automation, engineering excellence, and quality outcomes are actually delivered on the ground, not just defined in strategy decks.
You will bring deep experience in getting large automation and engineering initiatives done, working shoulder‑to‑shoulder with teams, removing friction, accelerating delivery, and improving the lived experience of engineers and quality practitioners. Your success will be measured by outcomes: working automation, faster feedback, predictable delivery, improved customer experience, and highly engaged engineering teams.
This role blends execution, people leadership, and pragmatic engineering judgment, with a strong bias toward action, simplification, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Execution‑First Automation & Engineering Outcomes
Own and drive end‑to‑end execution of automation and quality‑enabling initiatives across multiple teams and platforms.
Ensure automation efforts move beyond pilots and POCs into scaled, adopted, and value‑producing solutions.
Work directly with teams to unblock delivery issues, reduce complexity, and accelerate time to value.
Partner with Engineering and Product leaders to embed quality and automation naturally into day‑to‑day engineering workflows rather than as a separate function.
Drive practical use of AI‑enabled automation where it clearly improves speed, quality, or cost, with a strong focus on delivery results.
Quality Enablement (Not Policing)
Shift the organization from quality as a gate to quality as an enabling capability owned by teams.
Ensure teams have the tools, frameworks, data, and guidance they need to build quality in from the start.
Champion fast feedback loops, risk‑based testing, and automation that meaningfully improves customer and business outcomes.
Focus on defect prevention, early detection, and operational resilience, rather than post‑hoc defect reporting.
Engineering & Automation Evolution
Lead pragmatic evolution of automation and testing approaches across teams with different maturity levels, meeting teams where they are.
Drive consistent adoption of engineering fundamentals such as:
Automation‑first thinking
CI/CD‑integrated validation
Shift‑left practices
Testability and observability in system design
Influence architecture and platform decisions to improve automation feasibility, reliability, and maintainability.
Balance modern practices with the realities of regulated, market‑critical systems.
Delivery, Accountability & Metrics
Own delivery outcomes across a portfolio of initiatives, ensuring predictable execution, transparency, and accountability.
Use data to continuously assess:
Effectiveness of automation
Cost of quality
Delivery throughput and bottlenecks
Make clear trade‑offs between speed, risk, quality, and compliance in day‑to‑day execution decisions.
Ensure teams focus on outcomes over activity.
People Leadership & Team Experience
Lead and develop a large, distributed organization of engineers, automation practitioners, and quality professionals (200+).
Be a visible, accessible, and trusted leader on the ground, actively engaging with teams.
Strongly focus on improving the day‑to‑day experience of quality engineers and developers:
Reducing toil and frustration
Improving tooling and clarity
Supporting growth and career progression
Build a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Lead teams confidently through change, ambiguity, and evolving expectations.
Stakeholder & Partner Leadership
Act as a trusted execution partner to Product, Engineering, Data, Risk, and Compliance leaders.
Translate delivery progress, risks, and trade‑offs into clear, actionable insights for senior leadership.
Influence without relying on formal authority, using credibility, data, and delivery results.
Represent execution and quality outcomes—not just functions—in governance and leadership forums.
Qualifications
15+ years of experience in engineering, automation, platform delivery, or quality enablement leadership.
Proven track record of getting complex automation or engineering transformation initiatives delivered at scale.
Strong hands‑on background in automation frameworks, CI/CD, and modern engineering practices (not necessarily from a traditional QE career path).
Demonstrated ability to lead large, diverse teams with a strong execution and people‑first mindset.
Experience operating in complex, regulated, or high‑risk environments with real delivery accountability.
Highly pragmatic, data‑driven decision maker with excellent stakeholder and executive communication skills.
Why This Role
Lead execution at the intersection of Engineering, Automation, Quality, and AI, with a clear mandate to get things done.
Make a visible, tangible impact on how teams deliver, experience their work, and serve customers.
Shape a culture where quality is engineered into products, not enforced after the fact.
Play a critical role in delivering high‑confidence, high‑availability platforms in a data‑intensive, regulated environment.
