Join our Global Design Ops team today, as we embark on a multi-year journey of design evolution at Sun Life.

As a member of the Sun Life XD  team, the Design System Technical Director will deliver a quality design system for Sun Life users globally. S/he or they will collaborate and provide technical leadership to cross functional teams from North America to Asia and enhance and re-establish a modern Sun Life design system.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Helios Core Design System codebase
  • Provide strategic input and create a comprehensive roadmap for the Design System
  • Interface with cross-functional teams to provide technical leadership
  • Oversee the development process and ensure high-quality code output
  • Collaborate with the Product Owner to manage the roadmap, timelines, and project milestones

Detailed Responsibilities

Design System Development and Maintenance

  • Lead the development efforts for the Helios Core Design System
  • Implement best practices in code architecture and design patterns
  • Ensure the design system is scalable, performant, and accessible

Strategic Planning and Roadmap Development

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the design system
  • Create and maintain a long-term roadmap for system enhancements and features
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement within the design system

Cross-functional Collaboration and Leadership

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for the design system
  • Provide guidance and support to teams implementing the design system
  • Foster strong relationships with UX/UI designers, developers, and product managers

Code Quality and Development Oversight

  • Establish and enforce coding standards and best practices
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members
  • Implement processes to ensure consistent high-quality code output

Project Management and Delivery

  • Work closely with the Product Owner to prioritize features and enhancements
  • Manage timelines and resources to meet project milestones
  • Communicate progress, risks, and issues to stakeholders effectively

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in front-end development and design systems
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of managing technical projects
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Deep understanding of web technologies, accessibility standards, and responsive design
  • Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with UX/UI design principles and tools
  • Understanding on Design System Principles

Required Skills

  • Experience in enterprise development and deployment processes
  • Proficiency in Web Components, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (e.g., Ionic, React, Vue, Angular)
  • Knowledge of build tools and package managers
  • Understanding of design tokens and their implementation
  • Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
