CI FINANCIAL

Director, Data Governance & Strategy

Toronto, ON Full time

At CI, we see a great place to work as one that is a safe place for everyone to have a voice, where people are empowered to take ownership over meaningful work, where there is an opportunity to grow through stretching themselves, where they can work on innovative products and projects, and where employees are supported and engaged in doing so.

CI Financial is seeking a Director, Data Governance & Strategy, to join our Data, AI & Analytics (DNA) leadership team. In this senior leadership role, you lead and define the governance framework that enables trusted data, regulatory compliance, and data driven decision making across CI Global Asset Management. You will work closely with data engineering, analytics, technology and business leaders to ensure data is treated as a strategic asset—well governed, well understood, and fit for purpose.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Data Governance Framework

  • Design and implement enterprise data governance policies, standards, and controls.
  • Partner with business definition owners, technical stewards to define and manage Critical Data Elements (CDEs) across CI data domains (i.e., security master, pricing, portfolio, risk, performance, client, ESG data and more).
  • Establish metadata, lineage, and business glossary standards.
  • Lead data quality monitoring, issue management, and root-cause remediation processes.
  • Lead and facilitate the enterprise Data Governance Council, driving policy adoption, issue resolution, and accountability across the organization.

Investment & Operational Data Oversight

  • Help improve data integrity across front-to-back investment workflows.
  • Reduce reconciliation breaks and manual intervention through structured data controls.
  • Partner with Operations and Risk to embed preventative data controls.

Data Risk & Regulatory Alignment

  • Embed data governance within enterprise risk and compliance frameworks in partnership with our CISO and privacy office.
  • Ensure data processes support regulatory and reporting requirements (e.g., SEC, OSC, FCA, GDPR where applicable).
  • Develop executive dashboards on data quality, risk, and governance maturity.

Enterprise Data Strategy (Data Spend & Value Optimization Focus)

  • Define and maintain a data strategy focused on optimizing data spend, aligned to firm priorities and business outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive inventory of third‑party and external data sources, including cost, usage, contractual terms, and business value.
  • Monitor and assess data usage, redundancy, and ROI across portfolio management, risk, distribution, and finance to inform investment and rationalization decisions.
  • Implement governance and ownership models to ensure strategic sourcing, ongoing value realization, and accountable use of enterprise data assets.

Technology & Platform Enablement (Data Governance Focus)

  • Own and manage the enterprise data governance platform(s), ensuring it supports consistent implementation of governance policies across CI.
  • Partner with business, technology, and data engineering teams to embed governance standards—including data classification, access management, metadata, quality control and lineage—into day‑to‑day data usage and workflows.
  • Lead the adoption and use of metadata management, data catalog, and governance tooling to improve transparency, discoverability, and control of enterprise data assets.
  • Enable analytics, AI/ML, and reporting use cases by ensuring data is appropriately classified, access‑controlled, and well‑documented, rather than by building the underlying platforms – critical for report certification.

Leadership & Change Management

  • Build and mentor a small, high-impact data governance team.
  • Drive cultural change toward accountability and data ownership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in data governance, data management, or data strategy.
  • Experience implementing enterprise data governance frameworks.
  • Proven track record improving data quality and reducing operational data risk.

Domain Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure, AWS, Databricks).
  • Working knowledge of data modeling and metadata management tools.

Leadership Competencies:

  • Strategic yet execution-oriented.
  • Strong stakeholder management across investment, risk, operations, and technology.
  • Ability to translate data concepts into measurable business value.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of security master and reference data, market data and pricing, portfolio accounting and performance measurement, risk and attribution data, and client and regulatory reporting data flows.
