Director, Credit Risk Management

Credit Risk Management (CRM) is an independent group under the direction of the Chief Credit Officer (CCO), who reports to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), responsible for the enterprise-wide credit risk oversight at Manulife. CRM has the mandate to promote a culture of risk awareness across all levels of the organization and has the responsibility to establish and maintain Manulife’s credit risk management framework. CRM performs the following primary functions: ensure investment guidelines and credit policies are current and consistent with best practice, maintain an effective internal risk rating framework, monitor risk of credit and other assets on a consistent and regular basis, provide an independent view of risk for large credit and equity asset transactions, and liaise with external stakeholders like OSFI and auditors.

This Director, CRM will play a prominent role in the Credit Risk Management group’s responsibility to develop, modify and provide risk oversight over policies, procedures, and standards through partnership with subject matter experts across the organization. The position will help ensure items such as risk appetite, proper controls, accountabilities, and miscellaneous authorities are clear and concise, and are also aligned with the risk statements provided by management and the Manulife Board.

The Director’s responsibilities will also include credit risk oversight of Manulife’s General Account portfolio across the organization. Investments include public and private fixed income, commercial mortgages, real estate, timberland, etc.   

Key Responsibilities:

1. Credit Portfolio Reviews

  • Conduct detailed credit reviews for selected samples across investment desks (e.g., Senior Loans, Asian Portfolio).

  • Assess rating appropriateness, analysis quality, and emerging risks.

  • Prepare Credit Review Summary reports with findings for Investment desks and Credit Committee.

  • Update annual fieldwork templates to reflect evolving risk factors.

2. Policy Framework Maintenance

  • Support development of policies, procedures, limits, templates for credit risk management.

  • Educate and collaborate with business teams on credit framework; ensure timely updates.

  • Identify gaps and share best practices in credit risk management.

3. General Account Portfolio Oversight

  • Monitor credit and related investments.

  • Assist in reviewing/updating investment guidelines for subsidiaries.

  • Track portfolio growth and shifts (e.g., transition from government to corporate bonds).

4. Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Implement and monitor compliance requirements.

  • Stay current on credit-specific regulations (e.g., OSFI’s B2 guideline) and ensure compliance.

  • Identify emerging regulatory trends for informed decision-making.

5. Reinsurance & Commercial Loan Oversight

  • Provide independent assessment of internal risk ratings for reinsurance portfolio.

  • Review counterparties, transactions, and collateral; support notetaking in meetings.

  • Perform credit analysis on bank counterparties; assist in onboarding commercial loans.

  • Help develop and maintain lending framework for reinsurance and commercial loans.

6. Ad-hoc Projects & CRM Support

  • Assist with stress testing (e.g., Moody’s Risk Frontier, Portfolio Studio).

  • Support special requests from regulators and rating agencies.

  • Stay updated on market developments impacting investment portfolios.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in commercial lending, credit risk management, or asset/investment management.

  • Degree in Business, Economics, Accounting, Actuarial Science, or a related discipline.

  • Comprehensive understanding of financial and accounting principles.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret a wide range of complex investment products with minimal supervision.

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to synthesize large volumes of information into clear, concise reports and presentations for senior management.

  • Excellent prioritization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional communication skills (oral and written), solid presentation abilities, collaborative approach, and strong interpersonal skills.
