What is the opportunity?

Reporting to the Head of Business Risk for RBC Wealth Management and Investor Services and being embedded in WM Global Asset Management’s (GAM) 1st line of defense (1B) function, the Director of Business Risk is a trusted Business Risk adviser to Senior Leaders across GAM Canada and GAM US. The Director provides leadership, expertise, advice, and counsel to support effective management of Operational Risk across GAM Canada and GAM US.

The Director will develop, implement, and sustain RBC’s Operational Risk Framework throughout GAM Canada and GAM US, ensuring alignment with the Enterprise ORM strategy, Risk Appetite, and relevant Combined US Operations (CUSO) requirements. The role will guide Business Risk leadership within GAM, enhancing their ability to anticipate and manage business risk effectively.

Manage a team of qualified and experienced Operational Risk professionals and practitioners and be responsible for planning, developing, and executing on all aspects of RBC’s Operational Risk practice for the GAM businesses outlined above.

What will you do?

  • Lead and manage all 1LOD (1B) Operational Risk responsibilities for GAM Canada and GAM US portfolio which includes planning, developing, and executing on all aspects of the Operational Risk practice for the businesses outlined above.
  • Manage and develop a team of four Senior Managers, Business Risk professionals, providing direction, coaching, and oversight across the execution of GAM operational risk activities.
  • Lead the 1st line execution of the RCM program in coordination with the businesses & Compliance. Establish and implement appropriate oversight to ensure that RCM policies are being adhered to and exceptions are escalated to the Senior Director.
  • Implement the enhancements to RBC’s Internal Control Management Policy in GAM businesses.
  • Implement the enhancements to RBC’s Risk Register and Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) and Process RCSA (PRCSA) program in GAM including the establishment and maintenance of Risk Register, Risk statements and aggregation of digitized RCSA.
  • Responsible for guiding the team in complying with RBC’s Issues Management framework and Project engagement.
  • Managing the team in performing Root Cause analysis of major events, Product risk reviews and IRPs
  • Participate in and represent GAM Business Risk in all GAM Canada, GAM US, and CUSO Operating Committees and other Governance forums such as Project SteerCos, New Product Working Groups etc., as the risk SME and as delegate of the Sr Director, providing oversight and challenge and independent operational risk perspective.
  • Act as a center of excellence for education and advocacy of information on RBC’s Operational Risk management practices and programs to foster sound operational risk management in WM.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Progressive leadership experience in the financial services industry with at least 10 years of management experience
  • CPA, CFA, or MBA
  • Good knowledge of leading operational risk practices and regulatory requirements and expectations for WM businesses.
  • Leadership presence and proficiency and experience from working in a variety of businesses within WM.
  • Collaborator and highly adept in working with various stakeholders, Business leaders within WM and functional partners.
  • Strong presentation and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Good impact and influence skills and problem solver

Must Have

  • CPA, CFA, or MBA
  • Good knowledge of leading Operational Risk practices and regulatory requirements and expectations for WM businesses.
  • Leadership presence and proficiency and experience from working in a variety of businesses within WM.

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience RBC Wealth Management or in a Business Risk role
  • Experience working with business and/or technology stakeholders in an Enterprise environment.
